Good morning, everyone!  It's Tuesday again, and we're peeking at Marked for Death.  It will be available tomorrow!!

So let's get back to where we were -- chapter 2, I do believe.

~~~~~
Taran McLaine knows the agony of his incubus father's curse more intimately than his siblings. A century ago he murdered the only woman he ever loved. When he finds her alive, he's faced with the ultimate heartbreak. They have no chance at a future--he's done all he can to insure that on his day of judgment the ancestors will deny him a mortal life.
Years ago, Solene Larouche embraced Taran and the dark curse that cloaked him. She knew the risk she faced, but when Drandar pulls her back to life, she agrees to aid the demon and damn Taran to eternal suffering. One look at the man who held her heart so long ago, however, changes her mind. She must find a way to free him, even if it means condemning herself to eternity as Drandar's slave.
As Samhain approaches, Solene and Taran conspire to destroy Drandar. But will their combined effort enable them to kill the incubus or will they be cast into Drandar's own special Hell and all hope of their renewed love marked for death?
~~~~~

Chapter Two

Twenty steps away from the hauntingly beautiful woman, her words registered in Taran’s mind.  He came to an abrupt halt beneath the light of a streetlamp.  She knew his name…

Beneath his feet, the world fell away.  He curled a hand around the iron post to keep from stumbling to his knees.  Solène—it couldn’t be.  He had felt her blood on his hands, watched as she gasped her last breath.  He had put her broken body in the ground, along with all that was good and decent in his soul.

Yet how else could she know his name?  She was identical.  She even wore the same perfume—jasmine with the faintest hint of cinnamon.  Solène Larouche was the only woman who could pull off such mismatched aromas.

Solène.

Something deep inside Taran began to tremble.

Her laughter rang through his head.  A vision of her as she raced into the grand music room and spun a circle on the parquet wood floor, her arms outstretched, her glorious long hair spilling out behind her.  It’s ours.  It’s really ours, Taran.  We’ll call it Serenity.  Come and dance with me.

He had taken her in his arms, laughing with her as he held her body close and spun her across the waxed floor.  The music was their own.  A sensual rhythm that held notes of whimsy and an undertone of danger.  They danced until standing so close became intolerable, and the fire that burned between them drew them to the floor, where she had cried out his name in ecstasy, and he had stared into her eyes, lost to the love that shone there.

Solène.

Alive.

Now, when he had done all he could to insure he would never know mortality.

He ground his teeth together and released the light post.  She could not possibly be alive.  This was some cruel trick of his mother’s, meant to somehow divert him from his intentions.  He was sick and tired of Nyamah’s interference.

With a hand clenched at his side, he turned back to the shop and the woman within.  He’d allowed her to  catch him off guard and sidetrack him from his purpose.  No more.  He had one final step to take to secure his end. Nyamah would not deter him from that plan.

He crossed to the door in half the time it had taken him to leave and jerked on the handle.  It didn’t budge.  She’d locked it.

Damn it.  Damn her.

To stop the rush of nonsensical rage, he inhaled deeply, closed his eyes, and counted to thirty.  One more reason why he needed to finish this vile act—the darkness raging in his soul made control damn near impossible.  Every little impulse wanted to take life.  Like kicking in this door.  He could try—venting the fury would bring an enormous rush of relief.  But all he would succeed in was breaking his toe.  He had helped drive the stake-like nails that held the wooden bar in place on the other side.  No one would get through this door without mechanical help.

And if the woman was Solène, she had further barred entry with her own powerful magic.  When a witch did not want interruptions, she did not have them.

Instead of following the rash urge, he hiked himself onto the short retaining wall and took a seat.  Someone else would come before she turned out her light.  Someone who wouldn’t be content with a locked door.  When the woman opened it to send the visitor away, he would let himself inside.

If not, she still had her late night coffee appointment to attend.  When she came out, as she always did shortly after the midnight hour, he would grab her then.

Today's Sunday Six is from Marked for Death.

“I’ve missed you,” she whispered.

Taran stood stock still for an indefinable passing of time.  She watched the full affect of his own yearning shift through his expression.  Surprise morphed into harsh angles as he combated something fierce that she’d never fully understood but accepted as part of him.  Then, those sharp planes and shadowed crevices smoothed with the hidden tenderness that lived in his heart.  That softness, that brief glimpse of the love he felt for her, stole Solène’s breath away.

For those of you just tuning in, this week we're discovering what happens to Taran when he walks across the street, intent on killing the woman who reminds him of the one woman he can't forget.  It's the second half of chapter one from Marked for Death, the last book in the Inherited Damnation series, which releases January 16th.

Marked for Death
Inherited Damnation, Book VIII

Taran McLaine knows the agony of his incubus father's curse more intimately than his siblings. A century ago he murdered the only woman he ever loved. When he finds her alive, he's faced with the ultimate heartbreak. They have no chance at a future--he's done all he can to insure that on his day of judgment the ancestors will deny him a mortal life.

Years ago, Solene Larouche embraced Taran and the dark curse that cloaked him. She knew the risk she faced, but when Drandar pulls her back to life, she agrees to aid the demon and damn Taran to eternal suffering. One look at the man who held her heart so long ago, however, changes her mind. She must find a way to free him, even if it means condemning herself to eternity as Drandar's slave.

As Samhain approaches, Solene and Taran conspire to destroy Drandar. But will their combined effort enable them to kill the incubus or will they be cast into Drandar's own special Hell and all hope of their renewed love marked for death?

~~~~~~
As the back door creaked open, Solène took a deep breath to steady the trembling in her hands.  She faced the long row of shelves behind the well-worn counter, unwilling to reveal herself in entirety to Taran.  The one encounter they’d had, had been close enough.  But time was at a premium.  Samhain occurred in two nights.  She couldn’t ignore her obligations any longer.
And she couldn’t deny a small part of her relished the knowledge that Taran would suffer for taking her life so long ago.
A very small part.
The rest of her was too busy wanting to throw herself into his arms and tumble back into the bed they had shared.  The life they had created.  The love they had known, despite the curse he suffered that damned her to an early grave.
Still, the reality of death had a way of tarnishing emotion.
Footsteps crossed the uneven marbled floor, bringing him closer.  She ordered her fingers not to shake as she reached for a green glass jar on the shelf above her head.  Pretending she couldn’t feel the threatening presence that clung to him, and ignoring the intoxicating scent of old world spice that drifted off his clothes, Solène removed the glass stopper and picked up a bowl of fresh ground sage.  She poured as Taran moved toward the counter.
At the fringes of her awareness another presence stirred.  Her spirit wards closed in, hovering just beyond the barrier of recognition, ready to thwart Taran’s murderous hand.
Oh, she knew why he had come.  Had expected it from the moment the demon Drandar reunited her with the mortal plane.  It had only been a matter of time.
“I’ll be with you in a moment,” she called.
Without a word, he moved to the north wall, where silver talismans nestled between thin tomes designed for Paris’s true masters of witchcraft.  Solène turned her head a fraction, watching the way he ran a reverent hand over the cover of one old spell.  Her breath hitched at the sight of his sharp profile, his long dark hair, the mouth that could curve so sensually, and so wickedly as well.  Over one hundred years, and he was still every bit as mesmerizing as the night they’d met at the opening of the Moulin Rouge.
His posture belied discomfort.  The lines on his forehead spoke of pain.  Her heart shuddered in sympathy.  Taran hadn’t come near this place they had once called home since he laid a single red rose on her freshly dug grave.  He passed down the street, lingered at a distance, but not once had he entered, not even when it had been opened for display the three times it had been on the market.
If his reaction was anything like hers when she’d set foot inside the dusty shop they had established together, he bled inside.  Looking on the things they had crafted together, the magic they had drawn and channeled during the quiet hours of night, had nearly broken her.
Taran jerked his hand away from a silver-handled dagger and his mouth formed a harsh line.  He turned toward the counter, his onyx eyes glittering.
Solène restored the jar to the shelf above her head, smoothed her hands down the front of her black shirt, and summoned courage.  She pulled a smile from deep within before turning to face him.  In the calmest voice she could craft, she asked, “How may I help you?”
Shock washed across Taran’s features.  He opened his mouth, snapped it shut, then gave a slight shake of his head.  “I was told…”  His voice vibrated with a lack of confidence that didn’t fit his character.
She moved to the edge of the counter, keeping her gaze locked with his.  “You were told I knew the arts, yes?”
A short nod of his head confirmed.
He was lying, but then she hadn’t expected anything less.  He’d need some sort of excuse to come into the store.  She didn’t cater to the general public, only to those who passed quiet referrals.
“Was there something in specific you needed?”  Solène took care to keep her voice light.  It wasn’t yet time to reveal her hand.  Spirits above, he looked delicious.  She could still feel the weight of his strong arms folding around her.  The warmth of his breath as he feathered a kiss across her lips.
Old longing stirred in the depths of her soul, and Solène had to grip the edge of the counter to ward off a dizzy spell.
Taran approached the counter warily.  His eyes raked down the length of her body, slowly flicked up to rest on her face.  Curiosity flashed in his dark stare, then morphed into pained disbelief.
Yes, it’s me, Taran.  Her smile faltered.
He looked so wounded.  So anguished.  How could she have ever believed she could damn him to an eternity of suffering?  She could no more carry out Drandar’s dark wishes, than she could hand Taran the knife he needed to kill her.
And yet… she’d give a thousand lifetimes to ease his pain.
Focus.  She swallowed down the cobwebs that gathered in her throat.  “If you’re looking for a rite for Samhain, I have a few hand-crafted rituals on the counter where you were just looking.”
“No.” he answered brusquely.  “I’ve forgotten now.”
Fine excuse.  Did that mean he’d changed his mind?  No, knowing him, he’d simply become so off-center that he needed time to reorganize his thoughts.
Taran tapped a fist on the scarred countertop.  His long black hair whipped over his shoulder as he pivoted on his heel.  He pushed it aside with a muffled oath and stalked to the door.
Solène stepped behind the false safety of the countertop.  When he set his palm on the door and pushed it open, she dug her nails into the wood.  He was halfway outside before she managed to force out words.  “Come back when you know what you’re looking for, Taran McLaine.”
Here's another six from Marked for Death, my release coming January 16th, the last in the Inherited Damnation series.
When he lifted his lashes again, sorrow reflected in his dark eyes.  “I’m…afraid…Solène.”
His rough whisper shot daggers into her heart.  In all their time together, he had never confessed fear, never let down his prideful walls and admitted something so honest.  She arched her back and rose off the mattress to press her lips to his.  “There’s nothing to fear.”
Well, it's that time...a bittersweet time for me.  My Inherited Damnation series comes to a close on January 16th with the release of Marked for Death.  I've had a wonderful time with these characters, and more so with the darkest sibling, Taran.  I hope you enjoy his story as much as I did writing it.  It's really a very emotional journey.  Very emotional.
Here's the first part of Chapter One, to whet your appetite!
Chapter One
Like sapphires hidden in earth’s inky depths, the subtle cobalt sheen of her hair called Taran McLaine by name.  Within the cover of deep shadow, he tracked the glossy sway as the woman crossed the Rue de Rennes and strode past a small café that bustled with late night activity.  She stopped before an ornate iron gate that enclosed a recessed door on the ground level of a five-story, grey, stone building.
To anyone else, the building looked just like its neighbors.  Astute, touched by time, and weathered with charm.  To Taran, the building was Notre Sérénité, and the memories that came with the house haunted him.
Much like the woman who he had literally stumbled into months ago, when he was hurrying through a downpour to feed the mangy tomcat that watched him from a nearby trash container now.  She’d been running for the gate, he for the corner of the antiquated block, when they’d collided into one another.  He’d taken one look at her fair features, her vivid green eyes, and forgot how to function.
In 125 years, he had never encountered a woman who bore such a striking resemblance to Solène Larouche, the woman who had captured his heart and died at his hands.
Keys jangled as the woman unlocked the iron gate.  Hinges squeaked.  She slipped inside, shut the heavy iron behind her, and locked it once more.  Taran shifted his stare to the window on the left.  A light switched on within.  A few moments later, another illuminated the second story window atop the first.
She had even chosen the same bedroom Taran had spent too many nights in, for her own.  She was the only person to do so in over a century.  The other owners—tenants when one owner converted it into flats in the early 20th century—had somehow always chosen another room in the vast five stories as their personal sleeping quarters.
Taran fought a grimace as icy fingers gripped his heart.  A memory flashed, the same long dark hair spilling across white linens, her flawless skin flushed with unspent passion.  He squeezed his eyes shut against the unwanted recollection and shifted his weight.
When he had tamed the yearning, he opened his eyes to find the window dark once again.  If he stole around the block, behind to the terraced patio, the pavestones would be aglow with soft yellow light.  The rear entry would be unlocked, braced partially open to allow the October breeze in and the diverse aromas of incense out.
Whoever she was, she had opened the store once more.  The same shop that Solène and he had opened together, to service the desires of a spiritualistic community that dared not show their faces in the light of day.  He’d only had to make a few discreet inquiries to discover she sold the same wares.
Who was she?
Dáire encountered her briefly, back before their mother’s scrolls had been discovered.  After recognizing the same similarities Taran did, he duped the woman the niece.  Taran couldn’t bring himself to ask.  She was too much like Solène.  Too much like the memory he couldn’t escape.
The woman held the power to drag him into the abyss of feeling, to provoke emotions he hadn’t experienced since the night he murdered the woman he loved.
For that alone, she must die.
Taran breathed in the river’s wet scent and straightened his shoulders.  He didn’t hold a knife this time, as he had so long ago.  No, anymore, he didn’t need manmade tools to suffocate life.  His hands would work just fine.  Quicker too, as he snapped her neck.  She wouldn’t suffer, and he would solidify his own eternal demise. For by killing her, he would guarantee the ancestors would never return him to life.
He pushed away from the shadowed wall he leaned against and struck off down the street, winding beneath the streetlamps that painted Paris’ Left Bank with serenity.  For months he had put this off, waiting until he had done all he could to insure he would never draw another breath.  He’d even left Paris for a few months at a time to avoid the fierce urge that unwanted memories sparked.
In a few minutes, all he would need was his mother’s last scroll to secure the only peace he would ever know.
Taran crossed the street in swift, determined strides.
Come back next week for the continuation of chapter one!
Here's today's Sunday Six, from my upcoming release, Marked for Death, the last in the Inherited Damnation series.  It releases January 16th.
Another heavy fist slammed into him, only this one turned the emptiness that threatened to suck him down into a bottomless abyss into a field of electricity.  The very air around him snapped with the intangible charge they had shared from the moment of first meeting.  For an instant, he forgot the years that separated them, the death she’d suffered at his hands.  He knew only the deep need to touch Solène.  To connect with everything she was and become part of it.  Part of her.
Enslaved by Fear
Inherited Damnation, Book VII
For standing against her brother, Brigid McLaine is imprisoned within her home. All she wants is freedom and the ability to follow her dark nature. But captivity poses a greater threat in the form of her handsome guard, Micah Nelson. Day after day of confinement leads her down a treacherous path of desire she can no longer ignore.
When Micah befriended Brigid six years ago, he never imagined the woman who haunted his every fantasy would end up being the very same demon he's employed to guard. During the forced confinement, he comes to learn the softer, gentler side of the woman who is despised by her family--and he recognizes the fear that keeps her chained to her sire. As their bond strengthens and passion ignites, Micah str uggles to convince Brigid to confront her fears and escape her incubus father's dark designs.
Yet with the sabot of Litha so near, one of them must make a choice. Will Brigid find the ability to confront her sire once and for all and embrace the lightness in her heart--or will Micah find the courage to let go of the one thing he wants most? Brigid.
Now, let's see how Micah reacts to Brigid's advances.
~~~~~~

Micah ground his teeth together. Christ Almighty, the woman was going to kill him. She might not accomplish it with her dark powers or her vile alignment with the incubus who gave her life. But she sure as hell would flay him open if she kept up this game. It didn’t matter that he knew she attempted to bend him to her wishes for her own designs. It didn’t matter if she represented everything he spent his life trying to banish from earth. His body hadn’t given a damn about Brigid’s demonic blood since he’d laid eyes on her a good six years ago. It wanted her like lightning wanted metal.

He pushed her hand off and snapped his book shut. “I can too.” Rising to his feet, he returned her sultry smile with one of his own. Two could play this game. She wouldn’t like it, but his job didn’t involve pleasing Brigid, no matter how he might desire her. He leaned in close and brushed his lips across her cheek as he whispered, “I’m going for a walk. See you later.”

It required every bit of his self control not to laugh when a low growl rumbled in Brigid’s throat. Her amber eyes flared like the fire she so easily manipulated, and her delectable mouth pinched into a hard line. He tossed her a casual wink, strode to his room, and shut the door behind him.

He leaned against the door, drawing measured breaths to push the tension out of his body. “Damn,” he muttered. If it weren’t for her demonic blood, he would have already given in to the desire that stirred each time he looked at her. One of these days he wasn’t going to be able to walk away. She’d touch him like she had on the couch, put those damnable lips on him again, and he’d forget all the reasons why he should stay clear. Reasons like she was a demon. Like the even deeper desire to extract revenge on him for keeping her confined that she tried to hide.

Reasons like the dark curse that destined her to kill the man she loved.

The scent of amber and patchouli wafted from the fibers of his T-shirt to his nose. Micah shoved away from the door, stalked to his dresser, and jerked a clean shirt out. He could walk until the sun refused to rise and he’d never clear his head with Brigid’s perfume clinging to him. And if he happened to cross paths with Fintan and Beth, they’d never believe Micah hadn’t succumbed to Brigid. They expected him to fail. That he’d survived four months was testament to his training and his knowledge of demons.

He intended to survive another four. By then, maybe the McLaine’s would defeat Drandar and Brigid might escape the fear that imprisoned her far more than Micah’s incantations and spells of warding.

In the meantime, fresh air would grant him sanity.

Exiting his room, he took a moment to murmur the memorized words that would strengthen the invisible boundaries that confined Brigid to these three rooms. She shot him a glare from her position near the window, where she picked up the broken pottery. He threw her a sugary smile. “Have fun.”

Not caring to hear the litany of oaths his jibe would bring, he hurried out the door. Brigid in a fit of temper was a thing to behold. Sexy. Persuasive.

Dangerous.

In the hall, he took a deep breath and focused on that harsh truth. No matter how she affected him, he couldn’t forget Brigid was her father’s daughter and every bit as deadly. She’d turned on her own brother. Left Fintan without aid and subject to Drandar’s malicious attack. Proof enough. She wouldn’t hesitate to turn on him if he gave her miniscule opportunity.

Still, another side of his conscience nagged as he made his way down the winding stone staircase. Brigid might be demonic, but only half. Another part of her was human, and that half was all woman. A woman that played on his mind more often than he cared to admit. He dreamt of her. She stayed with him even when he left her within the confines of her temporary prison. Brigid McLaine managed to do what dozens of other demons had never accomplished—she haunted him.

In her games he realized her desperation to be free from confinement. In the far away stare she assumed when she looked outside her windows, he recognized her longing for the nature she stemmed from. And in the infrequent touch of her lips he understood passion that burned as deep as his and carried a tenderness Brigid would never admit to.

He also recognized her fear. Not of what Micah was capable of. Not fear of her brother Fintan and his strength of light. But fear that stemmed from the very being who created her. Drandar.

Brigid feared her sire more than she feared anything in this world. Micah would stake his life on the gut feeling that terror drove her to the things she did.

Of course, he wasn’t stupid enough to point that out to her. Still, he hadn’t failed to observe the slight vibrato of faltering courage that rang in her voice when she managed to work around his magical wards and render them useless. Confronting her with that truth, however, would only enrage her.

And right now, Micah wasn’t strong enough for the inevitable fight with her stubborn pride. His magic could stand up to hers, yes. His strength of will to perform that magic on her—another thing all together. He would if it meant saving his own life, but despite everything she was, everything she represented, he couldn’t bring himself to summon his full strength and physically harm Brigid.

He saw too much of the woman inside her hard shell of darkness. Understood her too well.

Grumbling to himself, he descended the stairs. Sympathizing with a demon was the first step in failure. If he let her get to him, he would indeed succumb. And that was even worse than combating with the fiery redhead he spent his days and nights with.

Another peek at last week's release, Enslaved by Fear.

~~~~~~
Out Now!
If Micah touched her again, if he put that incredible mouth on her skin once more, she didn’t trust herself not to turn around and claw out his eyes.
“Don’t…touch…me,” she ordered in a near whisper.
He drew back in a flash. The mattress bounced as he shoved off the bed. “You know—the hot and cold I can do without. Either you want me, or you don’t, Brigid.”
Chapter One
If Brigid McLaine had to spend another day breathing the stale air of her confinement, she’d rip off her guard’s handsome head and serve it to the wolves. It would be a pity really—Micah Nelson’s arrogantly sloping nose serving as a midnight snack. Or his soft sensual lips being used for anything other than the purpose they were made for. And frankly, the thought of those pale blue eyes as an appetizer made Brigid’s stomach churn. But four months of imprisonment within the stone walls of Sgàil na Faileas—supposedly her home—was more than enough. She was going mad, slowly but surely.
She squinted at the back of Micah’s head, annoyed by the casual way he lounged on the sofa and studied a book of incantations that he would use against her when she managed to override his most current means of binding. His bottled lager sat forgotten on the short table to his left, droplets of water coursing down the paper label to create rings in the finish.
If she dumped it over his head at least the monotony would lift.
Brigid sighed and dropped her bowl of crackers on the floor. Pottery shattered, breaking the silence. The sound was loud enough to make her jump, but Micah didn’t do so much as glance over his shoulder.
“What now, Brigid?” he asked with a touch of indifference.
She straightened her legs and stood, fully aware of the way Micah watched her in the gilt mirror over her stone hearth. She stretched. Took her time to elongate her arms, arch her back, and push her breasts ever-so-slightly forward. A smirk tugged at the side of her mouth as Micah’s gaze slipped down the length of her body.
“I’m bored.”
“You’re bored every day. You aren’t locked up for fun and games.” His gaze dropped to his book.
No, she was locked up for standing against her brother Fintan who chose to act against their incubus sire, Drandar. A demon Brigid feared more than any spell Micah could ever cast. Not that Micah’s powers were weak. Her father’s were simply horrific. She rolled her eyes, stepped over the shards of pottery, and crossed the room to the couch. Bending over the back, she dipped her mouth to Micah’s shoulder. Close enough he could feel her breath on his exposed neck but not yet touching. “I’m tired of outthinking your magic. Let’s do something…” She dropped her head a fraction more and grazed his skin with her lips. “Else.”
Something like tangle up the sheets in her bed or find a new use for the ragged old couch. Anything to break the sexual tension that had been building between them for years. Not only had four months of imprisonment grated on her nerves, spending that time with the one man who’d been playing games with her libido ever since she met him, was driving her out of her mind.
Micah’s body stiffened. The pen he used to jot notes in the book’s margins stilled. His knuckles went white. “Just what did you have in mind?”
Brigid smiled as she slowly lifted her head. Her gaze locked with his in the mirror. Torturing Micah was surely a better alternative than throwing his head to the wolves. “I don’t know. Chess?” Sarcasm laced her words. She leaned on her elbows and drew a fingernail down the length of Micah’s neck as she lowered her voice to a husky murmur. “What sounds good to you?”
Micah abruptly leaned away, but made no other outward sign she affected him. “What sounds good to me is finishing this book.”
Uh-huh. Sure. She didn’t buy it for a minute. When he’d come out of his adjoining room with that book in hand, it had sounded so compelling that he put off reading for small talk until she caught him hungrily appraising her shorts-clad legs. Then he beat a hasty retreat to the couch.
Where he’d been watching her in the mirror when he thought she wasn’t aware ever since. Problem being, Brigid was aware of every instant Micah’s attention shifted to her. Four months of living together deepened the connection of six years of friendship. Sometimes, she’d swear she could hear his thoughts. More often, her skin prickled like a warm sunshine bath when his thoughts and attention honed in on her.
She knew he shared the same awareness. Oh, he tried to hide it, but Micah might be able to bar her from the outside world, but he couldn’t bar himself from her. He wasn’t as immune as he wanted her to believe.
She laughed softly and rounded the edge of the couch to fold one leg on the cushion beside him. As she sat, she leaned against his muscular arm. The side of her breast brushed his bicep, and a streak of pleasant fire surged up her spine. “So how many times have you read,”—she paused as she glanced at the book—“page 28? Three?” Deliberately she trailed her hand up his thigh. “Or more?”
To her delight, Micah’s muscles bunched beneath her palm. A sharp breath hissed through his teeth. Satisfaction thrummed through her. Maybe, just maybe, she could use this to her advantage. Not only might she find some relief from the ever-present ache of wanting him, but if she played him right, he might also neglect to strengthen the wards that kept her from leaving the trio of rooms and opening windows. She could run. Be free of this Scotland castle. Free of her brother Fintan’s happiness.
Free to follow the dark instincts that ran in her blood.
“Micah, I can think of better entertainment than that book.” As casually as she could, she dipped her fingers into the crease of his jeans at the juncture of his thigh.
Damn it. She didn’t want to hurt him. But she ought to. She ought to want to rip out his eyes and stuff them down his throat so they could never again pierce her
with that too-knowing light.
Instead, all she wanted to do was throw her arms around his neck and kiss him until the war between the two halves of her soul ceased.
Which only pissed her off more.
~~~~~~

At the sound of the voice he couldn’t forget, Angus snapped his head up. His gaze locked on the doorway, and for a moment, his lungs refused to function.

Isolde.

With the heavy thump of his heart, every particle of his being honed in on her presence. Long platinum hair hung from a loose ponytail that she somehow managed to make elegant, down past her waist, to peek out beneath her elbow and brush the middle of a toned thigh. Contrary to the usual dark blue uniform dress she nearly always wore, she was dressed in a pair of white riding trousers that accentuated the muscling of her lithe legs even more. He dragged his gaze up to her face, taking her in bit by breathtaking bit, until her pale silver eyes locked with his.

At the glimmer of anger in those unusual depths, he pursed his lips and dipped his hand back into the crate in front of him. “Isolde. I believe you quit. It’s none of your concern.”

“Don’t give me that tripe, Angus. You know very well why I quit.” She pushed off the wall and approached. The toes of her stylish knee-high boots crept into his peripheral vision. “Why are you doing this?”

The better question was why did she care? She’d quit. What he did with the old relics and antiquities shouldn’t concern her. But too many years of friendship refused to let him fall back on the defensive response. He rocked into his heels and sighed as he shot her an annoyed look. “In case it escapes you, I wouldn’t be sorting through these things if I still had a House Manager. I don’t have the time to manage Hatherly, Isolde. You know this.”

She scoffed, and her penetrating gaze narrowed a sliver more. “That’s an excuse. You could make the time. Instead, you’re signing over Thomas’s heritage to the preservation society.”

He reached into the crate and pulled out a brass vase, then set it aside, before reaching in once again. “He’s my son. I know what’s in his best interests.”

“And you think this is?”

“Thomas is going to Aysgarth in the fall, Isolde.” Unable to meet her accusatory glare, he focused on straightening a stack of old photographs. “He needs stability and discipline.” Not to mention that sending him off to school would keep him safe. There’d be someone constantly present to watch over him—a job Isolde had assumed instinctually. Without her…

An unexpected hollowness opened behind his ribs. Nothing had been the same without her, much as he hated to admit it. Hatherly was cold and empty. He no longer enjoyed the monotonous days spent in his office with the accounts while he waited for her to interrupt his concentration. And Thomas didn’t laugh like he used to. They all missed Isolde.

If he hadn’t kissed her, she’d still be here.

“Boarding school? You really have lost all the sense God gave you, Angus Shaw.” She blew out a breath that stirred the loose tendrils of hair framing her face. Kneeling at his side, she set a dainty hand on his shoulder. “Thomas has all that right here. He loves day school at Greystones, and he loves Hatherly. This is all he has left of his mother. You don’t have the right to take it away from him.”

Oh he had the right. Protecting Thomas fell under the general umbrella of fatherhood. Even if that meant burying the memory of Camille so far Thomas would never stumble across her again. The nightmares after her death were more than enough motivation.

He shook his head, returning to the task of sifting through the oversized crate that had been packed away shortly after Camille’s death. Fighting would accomplish nothing. He’d made up his mind, knew what was best for Thomas, and he wasn’t about to stay in this gloomy place any longer than he absolutely must.

“You are the most stubborn man, I swear.” Isolde muttered as she dipped a hand into the wooden crate.

“Instead of chastising me, why don’t you help me cart all this to the incinerator? It’s all trash.” He picked up the crate and urged it into her hands.

To his consternation, as she accepted the wooden box, her gaze dipped inside, and her delicate mouth pursed. Shooting him a scowl, she set it down in front of her. “This isn’t trash—these are photographs.” Reaching in, she pulled out a faded picture and cocked her head thoughtfully. “Is this Thomas?”

As Angus leaned over Isolde’s shoulder, the scent of wild heather filled his nose. His gaze dipped to the elegant line of her neck, locking on the silken skin her pulled-back hair revealed. Temptation rose like a swift fist to the gut. How many nights had he lain in bed, aroused to the point of painful, reliving the brief moment when his lips had grazed that tender flesh? She had been so sweet. So soft and pliant.

Just one more kiss. One more touch of her lips before she realized her flight across an ocean had been pointless and she left again. One more chance to become lost in feeling that he couldn’t cast aside.

Against his will, his head dipped closer. His breath stirred the wisps of platinum that refused to be constrained by her ponytail.

Choking down a groan, he jerked his attention to the photograph she held in her hand. As he steered his mind away from the treacherous path and focused on the toddler in the photo, a smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. “Yes. He just turned three. We were celebrating at the park.”

“And that’s Camille?” She tapped a woman wearing sunglasses in the background.

“Yes,” he answered tightly.

“Oh, Angus.” She twisted to look up at him. “You should keep these things. I don’t think I’ve seen a single photograph of Camille since I’ve been here. Do you know how much I would give for a picture of my mother?”

Indeed he did. Isolde’s own loss at an early age had helped her to bond with Thomas. But she wasn’t Thomas, and she hadn’t been here for the nightmares. Hadn’t suffered through night after night of his being too terrified to sleep. Unlike her, Thomas couldn’t cope with the memory of his mother.

And Angus couldn’t cope with reliving the helplessness that came with his son’s terror all over again.

He abruptly stood. “I have an appointment with the chairman of the preservation society. Take that to the incinerator, please. If you care to join us for dinner, Isolde, your company would be welcome.”

Without giving her time to respond, he strode from the room. He had promised to keep Camille safe and failed. No matter how badly Isolde drove him to distraction, he would not fail to protect his son.

“Mm-hm.” As he grazed his teeth against the thick vein alongside her neck, she turned her head a fraction, and her lips parted. Her irregular breathing joined his.

Angus inched his way closer to those heavenly lips, no longer certain of his own actions. He was playing with fire. Only he couldn’t be certain he wouldn’t be the one to burn in the end.

Chapter One

Lush green meadows and swaying fields of heather whispered promises of death Isolde McLaine knew she couldn’t escape. She’d abandoned Hatherly Hall and left England for America in a vain attempt to try. Now it loomed around her. Watching. Biding its time. Waiting for her to succumb to the stirrings of love that forced her away.

She stared out the taxicab’s window at Hatherly’s skyward reaching walls of stone. Beyond that iron gate, within those chilly halls, lay everything that had ever mattered to her. Everything she couldn’t have, and everything she craved all the same. If Angus Shaw hadn’t decided to sell the gothic monstrosity, she wouldn’t be here now. But she’d returned to the employer who threatened her existence to stop that travesty. To talk sense into Angus before he destroyed his son’s only maternal legacy.

“Damn him,” she muttered as the taxi nosed through the iron gates.

Angry was better—at least if she let that emotion fester she couldn’t get caught up in the far more damning feelings Angus provoked. And, if she focused on how achingly blind he was being, she might be able to forget the mesmerizing feel of his soft lips on hers.

Not entirely likely, given that every time she’d been with her family and watched her brothers and sisters embrace their soul mates she thought of Angus. But with Beltane fast approaching, she didn’t dare get caught up in all the emotion that came with Angus and his adorable son Thomas.

“We’re here, Miss. Will you be needing a return trip after the two o’clock tour?”

For a moment, the cabbie’s question perplexed her. As she opened her mouth to ask his meaning, however, logic clicked. Just because she’d quit her job didn’t mean Angus hadn’t hired another House Manager, and that the afternoon tours would cease. Isolde shook her head. “No. I’ll be staying a few days.”

“Oh, you’re visiting friends then?”

“You could say so.” Something like that. Isolde fished into her small satchel for a handful of bills and passed them over the seats. “Thank you for the ride.”

“My pleasure, Miss.”

She grabbed her solitary bag and climbed out of the cab as a shuttle unloaded a dozen passengers. Isolde fell neatly in line behind the crowd. No sense drawing attention to herself first. She needed to see Nadine, the museum curator before she confronted Angus. And with one tour bus unloading, that meant the museum was currently full of visitors who would be departing.

Listening to the awed murmurs of the tourists who surrounded her, Isolde followed the small group inside. While they mingled in the grand hall, admiring centuries-old oil portraits of the Hatherly family, she lingered near the glass doors to the museum, eyeing Nadine as she pretended not to listen for Thomas’s cheery voice.

Even more than she missed Angus, she missed the adorable eight-year-old boy who had weaseled into her heart the day she first met him, four years ago. Right now, though, Thomas was the last person she wanted to encounter. She needed to talk to Angus first. Talk some sense into him when Thomas couldn’t hear what she intended to say.

“Thank you! Enjoy your stay in Sheffield!” Nadine called brightly as the last visitor filed out the doors.

A spark of excitement lit within Isolde. Unable to help herself, she smiled. Until right now, she hadn’t realized how much she looked forward to seeing Nadine again. Doing her best not to rush through the doors and hug her old friend, Isolde entered with quiet, controlled dignity.

Nadine remained behind the admissions counter, her attention riveted on a ledger that she scribbled in. Isolde used the older woman’s preoccupation to her advantage and approached quietly.

“So where is the infinitely stupid master of the house?”

With a startled gasp, Nadine jerked her nose out of the ledger and gaped at Isolde. Surprise gave way to recognition and her chubby face lit with a smile. “Oh my! Isolde! When you said you were coming, I had no idea you meant today.”

Isolde gave in to a grin. “You should have known better. How long did I fight to turn this place around and pull it out of the red? I’m not giving that man one extra day to destroy all my hard work. Did he convince you into giving the tours?”

“He guilted me into it.” Laughter brimmed in Nadine’s warm brown eyes. She reached across the countertop and patted the back of Isolde’s hand. “I think you just couldn’t stand to stay away.”

Despite her bravado, Isolde felt heat creep into her cheeks. Nadine knew. For that matter, the entire staff knew about what had happened between Angus and herself the week before she quit her job three and a half months ago. All thanks to one maid who found it necessary to gossip after walking into the library and interrupting the kiss that should have never happened. Thankfully, Angus had fired the young girl moments after the story reached his own ears. Embellished. Tenfold.

“Where is he, Nadine?” she asked more quietly. “I want to have this initial conversation over with before Thomas figures out I’m here. I won’t know what to tell him, until I talk to Angus.”

“In the cellar. He muttered something about separating the collectables from the personal items.”

“More things he wants to sell?”

Nadine winced, giving Isolde all the answer she needed.

Sighing, Isolde shook her head. “Did you inform him he’s behaving like a bloody fool?”

“No. I phoned you.”

Because Isolde was the only person brave enough to stand up to Angus Shaw. She nodded again, understanding what Nadine didn’t say. Wouldn’t say. “Well. I suppose I’ll go confront the dragon.”

“Shall I see that Enid sets a place for you at the dinner table?”

A frown pulled at Isolde’s brow as she considered. If Angus listened, if she managed to talk sense into him, she’d enjoy dining with her friends. If he threw her out—which he might well do given how irate he’d been when she quit—she’d be dining alone at an inn in Sheffield.

“Save that thought. I’ll get back to you on it.” Turning, she cut a path around the Renaissance statues the second Lord of Hatherly had imported from Italy and moved toward the exit.

“Good luck, Isolde. His mind is set.”

Isolde nodded. Of course it would be. Hatherly Hall represented everything Angus couldn’t stand to look upon. He was gone more than he was in attendance most years. He’d be glad to be free of the responsibility. Free of the memories he refused to confront.

She left her bag in the hall. At the top of the stairs that led into the dark, musty belly of the grand estate, Isolde paused. She’d rather confront her vile sire, rather stand toe-to-toe in combat against her incubus father, than encounter Angus. Her heart tripped unsteadily. Her stomach coiled into a tight ball of barbs. She wanted to see him…too much.

Pulling in a deep breath, she swallowed down the rising tide of awareness and murmured quiet words of magic designed to keep the dark half of her soul under control. It sensed Angus too. Knew he was her weakness. And it longed to see her falter so it could bathe in blood.

She took the stairs carefully and followed a faint flicker of light at the far end of the underground chambers. It glowed from within a room that had once held prisoners. Now, it held boxes and crates, things the Hatherlys had amassed through the centuries. Heirlooms that signified life gone by. Treasures Angus should cherish, as opposed to his conviction to auction off his deceased wife’s memory.

Isolde stopped short in the doorway, the sight of him temporarily rendering her speechless. Bent over a large crate, he rummaged through the contents. His usual suit coat lay on the stone floor in a forgotten heap, giving her a rare view of fine linen cloth pulled tight across broad shoulders. She’d felt those muscles there. Thrilled in the strength he cloaked away rippling beneath her palms. Worse, she could recall those tightly hewn cords so vividly the encounter might have well happened yesterday. The heat of his body, the possessiveness of his mouth, the dizzying scent of his sweet spice cologne…

Longing rose, and Isolde winced. She couldn’t get caught up in Angus Shaw. Not any more than she already was. Her sire’s curse hung over her head, promising if she allowed Angus room in her heart she’d kill him. Worse, it promised inevitable mortality. An escape her destiny wouldn’t allow. Swallowing down all the feeling that threatened to override her senses, she leaned a shoulder on the doorframe, folded her arms across her chest, and squinted at his dark head. “I do believe you’ve lost every bit of sense you possess. Just what do you think you are doing, Angus Shaw?”
