Good Morning, Bloggers!  Please give a warm welcome to Cameo Renae, who's introducing the first book in her new series, Hidden Wings.

Hidden Wings
YA Paranormal Romance

Seventeen, for Emma Wise, would be a life changing year; sole survivor in car wreck which robbed her of the parents she loved, started a spiral of blurry happenings. A broken arm and few scrapes and bruises are all the outward marks she bares, but inside, her heart is broken and the pieces scattered to the ends of the earth. Whisked away to Alaska, and an aunt she’s never met, Emma must start all over… broken and alone.

Escorted by the gorgeous Kade Anders, Emma succumbs to a new barrage of feelings. Warmth rushes through her, accompanied by dizzy, euphoric feelings she’s never thought possible. His touch is electrifying to her body and soul. And…it’s only just begun for her.

The secrets unveiling themselves to Emma are going to send her life into a whirlwind of deceit. Her parents, who she loved dearly, weren’t hers at all, and she’s not who she thought she was, or even what she thought she was. Being one of a kind has now placed Emma in the heart of a danger she knew nothing about. Centuries have been passed, awaiting her arrival, and now creatures of horrifying, evil proportions are coming for her. With the help of six, mind-numbingly, beautiful Guardians, and the Aunt she’s just beginning to know, she must be kept safe until her eighteenth birthday. Only then, her transformation will be complete, and she will have a chance at survival. Time will tell what Emma will become, and if she will survive to see eighteen.

Cameo agreed to sit down and answer some questions -- here's what she had to say!

Briefly take us on the journey with you – when did you start writing, did you start in the genre you’re published in now, what hurdles did you have to overcome, etc.

Cameo: I always had a love of writing. Growing up, I enjoyed writing poems and short stories, but it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I joined an online writing community and began posting short stories. I had such wonderful feedback from others that I decided to attempt a full-length novel. I had NO idea what I was doing, and didn’t have a clue what “social networking” was. Google Search became my best friend, and I scoured the internet to see what word counts were, what genre my story would be considered, submit or self-publish? It was a total “learn from scratch” experience, but I don’t regret any of it. Because of it, I learned and grew so much and am able to help others now.

When I first started writing a full-length novel, I started with a fantasy. Halfway through, I had a dream which sparked In My Dream. A year later, I self-published In My Dreams, which became my debut novel. It was recently picked up, given a fresh coat of paint and some sparkles, and republished in December 2012 with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. My second novel, Hidden Wings, took about 6 months to write, and was also picked up by the same awesome publisher.

Obviously you write in the YA Paranormal Romance genre.  Is that your favorite genre to read?  Do you write in any other genres, or under any other pen names you’d like to share?

Cameo: I like to read YA Paranormal, horror, romance, mystery, fantasy, magical. Actually, as long as it can hold my attention, I’ll read it. Right now, I am stuck in the YA Paranormal genre, but I do have a fantasy and a post-apocalyptic coming up soon.

Right up my alley -- fantasy!  Holler at me for a Fantasy Friday spot when you're ready!

Of the books you have published, do you have a favorite?  If so, which one and why?

Cameo: I love both of my published books, but I have to say that Hidden Wings was a lot more fun to write. I completely fell in love with the characters, and the whole story in general. I guess it was also easier to write because I already knew what to expect.

What are your published titles and please tell us about anything coming down the pipe next.

Cameo:  In My Dreams was published December 2012.
Hidden Wings (Book 1 in the Hidden Wings Series) will be published January 2013. Broken Wings (Book 2 in the Hidden Wings Series) will hopefully be published in the Summer of 2013. I’ve also got a few other things on the back burner, but not sure which ones will make it this year. Depends on which characters are talking to me the most.

Okay, so let's talk about Hidden Wings specifically!  Tell me about your plot development?  How did the idea spur, did you have to do much research, any interesting tidbits that we should know?

Cameo: Hidden Wings was sparked from my debut novel In My Dreams. *SPOILER* lol At the end of the story there were Guardians, and I loved them sooooo much, that I decided to write a story based on them. As I started plotting out the story, I did do a little research. I research things like locations, and other simple details, but I don’t like to do much more than that because I like to create my own worlds. It’s easier for me to create something from scratch.

Let’s talk heroes – What’s one thing about your hero that we wouldn’t necessarily learn in the book?  A secret dream, an embarrassing habit, an episode from childhood.

Cameo:  There are many heroes in my book, but one particular one (who comes off being very proud, snarky, and into himself) secretly dreams of finding his match. His soul mate.

All heroes are unforgettable in one way or another. What’s one thing about your hero that makes your heart go pitter-pat?

Cameo: First of all, my main hero is gorgeous. He is a skilled warrior, a Guardian, and always seems to be there for the ones he protects.

If your hero doesn’t have a pet in your novel, what kind of pet would best suit his personality?

Cameo:  I would say a hawk. Those he guards, don’t know he’s watching them. (Most of them) He watches and protects them from afar.

Moving on to heroines – Everybody has flaws.  Sometimes they are endearing, other times they are annoying.  What is your heroine’s greatest fault?

Cameo:  She can be sassy at times, but she’s also been through so much that her emotions tend to get the best of her.

Without giving away details that might spoil the story for those who have not read it, could you tell us the one strength your heroine provides to your hero?

Cameo: The power of a mere ~ touch.

If your heroine was your daughter – what advice would you give her upon meeting your hero?

Cameo:  If it was the hero in Hidden Wings, my advice would be… “Girl, don’t mess this up!” Lol

If we peek in on your hero and heroine’s lives ten years from now, can you give us a glimpse of what we’d see?

Cameo:  That’s really hard to say, because I still have to write the story for their upcoming year, and can’t give anything away. LOL BUT, let’s say that things get complicated for them, and they will have to make some major decisions.

Hee -- I know how that goes!  Just a couple more, and you can get back to writing that next story.  Laugh!

What has surprised you the most about being a published author?

Cameo:  The thing that surprised me the most were the reactions and comments of the readers. I’m absolutely and completely humbled by them. To know that my books have actually made some readers cry, think, or even take them on a wild adventure and have them message me and say…Hurry, we want more! It’s been a very wild, wonderful, emotional ride, and I love every single moment of it.

Many writers describe themselves as "character" or "plot" writers. Which are you?

Cameo:  I am definitely a character writer. I don’t have papers of my plot all written out, and most times I don’t even know what’s going to happen next. In my mind, I have the beginning and end. Everything in between just comes to me as I write. My characters dictate the direction of the story, and I am just the vehicle who writes it. Just a few weeks ago, something within the story happened and it had me in tears because I didn’t see it coming. I know is sounds crazy, but it’s true.

What would you like to say to writers who are reading this interview and wondering if they can keep creating, if they are good enough, if their voices and visions matter enough to share?

Cameo:  Every person has a unique story to tell. If you want to become a writer, then write. I constantly questioned my writing ability while writing In My Dreams, wondering if it was good enough, and if I should hit that publish button or not. But, I’m glad that I pushed through the doubt. Since it’s been published, I’ve had so many messages and emails from the lives that it touched. My story actually gave some readers hope. That is BEYOND what I could have ever asked for.

To new writers…keep writing. Write what’s in your heart and stay true to yourself and your style. You will always have lovers and haters, but just remember that everyone has a preference. Don’t give up. Follow your dream and one day you will be living it.

Very sound advice, and I agree whole-heartedly.  Thanks for stopping by today, Cameo.  Best of luck with Hidden Wings!

Thank you, Claire for having me on your awesome blog!!! It was a blast!!!

Kelsie faces betrayal by the one she holds most dear, only to meet someone new who could change her entire existence; past, present, and future. If only she can stay alive long enough to find out the truth...

*****

London corralled Ryder from the book and coerced him into interviewing Kelsie.  This is highly entertaining-- make sure your coffee is appropriately swallowed.  And say hello to Ryder, or Boots as he's known!

Hi, my name is Ryder, those most call me Boots. No, boots aren't my thing. I'm more into baref-- oh, yeah this isn't supposed to be about me. I'm a new character in the story of Whisper's Edge for those that don't know me. Today I get the privilege of interviewing Kelsie Adair.

Boots: Kelsie, glad you could find time in the middle of your nighttime exploits to join us.

Kelsie: *glares* "nighttime exploits?" I'm not promiscuous, since that seems to be what you're implying.

Boots: *blanches* Ahem, I didn't mean it like that. I meant that I know you're busy.

Kelsie: Uh-huh. Nice recovery.

Boots: how do you like living in a Guild? Does it bother you being constrained by strict rules?

Kelsie: *Smirks* Well, if you know anything about me, you know that I only follow the rules in public. I'm the perfect guilds-man on the surface. Keeps things...less challenging if they think you're compliant.

Boots: So, you're wild and reckless underneath? A blonde bombshell with a perchance for violence that revels in the rush of the fight and bloodshed?

Kelsie: *blank stare* Really? Bombshell? You think I'm hot?

Boots: Uh... No.

Kelsie: Ugly?!

Boots: Ahem... No! I just don't want to imply, er, I don't want a certain shaman to come after me. I'm sure you're attractive in your own way.

*Mica walks in and slaps the back of Boots head* "Ryder, shut up before you stick your foot farther into your mouth. Now, hurry up so you can help me."

Boots: *Nods* Sorry Mica.

Kelsie: *Snickers* You are so whipped.

Boots: *Glares lasers* right. Yeah, it's not like you don't have Drake wrapped around your little finger or anything.

Kelsie: *Knowing smirk* Are we done yet? I need to get back to the Development facility to see if I still have a job after I roughed Trip up.

Boots: I guess. I was hoping for longer. But, I'm needed elsewhere.

Kelsie: *Can't stop laughing* Whipped. You're so whipped. You guys are far too easy.

Boots: Whatever. Girls just need to stop whipping us guys. Er, that came out wrong. Kelsie, thank you for joining me today. And, please don't tell Drake about me calling you hot.

Kelsie: *smiles mischievously* So you DO think I'm hot! Ha! You better be nice, or I might just tell him.

About the Author:

London Cole is an author of Paranormal Young-Adult novels and novellas. He resides in the large and highly over-heated state of Texas, though he is not originally from there. London was born in the Pacific Northwest, growing up on an Island very near Canada. That means that he is known to slip up and occasionally use words like “ehh” and pronounce “about” like “aboot”.

Growing up, he always wanted to write but never really knew where to start. Then he got sucked into classical music, against his will, at an early age. Unlike many, he never had imaginary friends as a child, though since he was born into a navy family, the constant moving made him a loner. It was easier to be a loner than try to make new friends all of the time. Being a loner, and having been forbidden from watching TV by his loving but sheltering mother, he turned to creating stories to entertain himself out of sheer boredom. Creating stories became a large part of his life to the point that he started narrating everything he did and conducting dialogue between multiple characters while in the shower.

When London wasn’t writing stories, he was reading them. He went through dozens of books a month, mainly mysteries that his mom checked out from the library.

Once he got older, after high school and college, he started to take writing seriously. He became more confident in his writing, and now, here we are today.

Morning, everyone!  I'd like you all to give a warm welcome to Laura Bickle, who's sharing The Hallowed Ones with us today.  I'm again on a cover squee -- look at it!  It just sucks you right in and makes you want to start turning pages.

The Hallowed Ones

If your home was the last safe place on earth, would you let a stranger in?

In this captivating thriller, an Amish settlement is the last safe haven in a world plagued by an unspeakable horror…

Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers are free to experience non-Amish culture before officially joining the church. But before Rumspringa arrives, Katie’s safe world starts to crumble. It begins with a fiery helicopter crash in the cornfields, followed by rumors of massive unrest and the disappearance of huge numbers of people all over the world. Something is out there...and it is making a killing.

Unsure why they haven’t yet been attacked, the Amish Elders make a de-cree: No one goes outside their community, and no one is allowed in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man lying just outside the boundary of their land, she can’t leave him to die. She refuses to submit to the Elder’s rule and secretly brings the stranger into her community—but what else is she bringing in with him?

  I have read one Amish romance / fiction and it was wonderful.  This one sounds ten times better, to be honest.  I love the fact it is darker than many.  And Laura is going to talk to us about darkness today.  So with much ado, I turn the blog over to her.
Relative Darkness
By Laura Bickle

Darkness is different for every person, in every place.

I live in a city. Even when the moon is new, it never gets completely dark here. From my window, I can see my neighbors’ porch lights, headlights on the freeway, and the illuminated sign of a hospital. There’s enough light to see by if I forget to take out the trash. The glow from the city blots out all but a handful of stars.

But I have no illusions about my safety. I would probably not walk alone down the street in this grey gloom. If I did, I’d be vigilant. I’d scurry out and back, watching carefully over my shoulder. I wouldn’t linger – I’d be relieved to make it back to the pool of light surrounding my porch.

For the protagonist of THE HALLOWED ONES, darkness is something else altogether. Katie is an Amish girl living in a Plain community. There are no lights in houses, no cars with sweeping headlights. No electricity. Her night, in the rural countryside, is soft and total. She can see the stars and the broad river of the Milky Way above her.

Katie has never feared darkness. She and the night are old friends. In winter, she completes her farm chores long after the sun has set. She has never feared anything the shadows hold – not the deer, the bats, nor the rabbits. Not even coyotes. She knows everyone in her community by name, and has nothing to fear from any of them.

She has never feared the night – not until now.

Katie’s safe world starts to crumble. It begins with a fiery helicopter crash in the cornfields near her house, followed by rumors of violence and the disappearance of large numbers of people in the world outside her community. Something is out there, something that kills under the cover of night. Unsure why they haven’t been attacked, the Amish Elders make a rule: No one goes outside their gates, and no one is allowed in.

When Katie finds a gravely injured young man lying just outside the boundary of their land, she can’t leave him to die. She refuses to submit to the Elders’ decree, secretly bringing the stranger in to her community. But what else is she bringing in with him?

Katie will come to understand the threat of darkness, both from within her community and Outside. She will discover that the night holds many things to fear, both from the unknown and the people she has trusted her whole life.

~~~~~
Frankly, the more I hear, the more I wish I wasn't buried under deadlines and could set everything aside and read it now.  Let's take a peek though, together.  (FYI Laura provided the full Chapter 1, but for spacial reasons, I've cut it at an excellent hook.  The opening is brimming with beautiful descriptions and simply warms your heart.)
We were a good-size settlement of Plain folk, about seventy families, spread over half a county. We had heard rumors of other Plain communities that were shrinking, owing to the youth and the spell of Rumspringa. And there were tales of other communities that grew so fast, there was no farmland for young families. But not ours. Ours had remained the same size and shape as far back as anyone could remember. There always seemed to be enough land for everyone to have at least forty acres to farm, if they wanted it.
And everyone seemed happy, unaffected by the schisms that seemed so common in other Amish settlements. The Bishop said that was because we stuck to the old ways. Everyone knew what was expected of us. There was no renegotiation of rules every time some new technology flew up a bonnet. The Ordnung was the Ordnung. Period. And we had been rewarded for following the Ordnung: there was always enough work and food and spouses and land for everyone. God provided for his people.
The pumpkin patch that my little sister tended was nearly as ripe as Sunny with distended gourds. There was one particularly large monster of a pumpkin that Sarah had a special fondness for. Twice daily she squatted beside it, whispering to it and petting it. Whatever she was doing seemed to be working — the pumpkin was easily over a hundred pounds, with another month to go before it would be severed from the vine.
Mrs. Parsall leaned against the bumper of her old blue station wagon. She pulled her keys from her pocket, gave me a one-armed hug. “You take care of yourself, kiddo.”
I grinned against her shoulder. But something dark against the blue sky caught my attention. I squinted at it, first thinking it to be a bird. But it wasn’t a bird at all.
I stepped back from Mrs. Parsall, pointing at the sky. “Look!”
A dark dot buzzed overhead, growing larger. It was a helicopter, flying so low that I could hear the whump-whump-whump of its blades. It was painted green with a white cross on the side, seeming to wobble in the blue.
Mrs. Parsall shaded her eyes with her hands, shouting to be heard above the roar. “It’s Life Flight.”
“It’s a what?”
“It’s a medical helicopter. From a hospital.”
“It shouldn’t be doing that, should it?”
“Hell, no. It — ”
The helicopter veered right and left, as if it were a toy buffered by a nonexistent tornado. The breeze today was calm, stirred by the helicopter blades and the roar. I thought I saw people inside, fighting, their silhouettes stark through a flash of window, then lost in the sun. The helicopter made a shrieking sound, the whump-whump-whump plowing through the air as it bumped and bucked. It howled over us, so close that I could have reached out and touched it if I’d been standing on the roof of our house.
Mrs. Parsall grabbed me and flung me to the ground. I shoved my bonnet back from my brow in enough time to see the helicopter spiral out of control, spinning nose over tail into a field. It vanished above tall tassels of corn.
For a couple of heartbeats, I saw nothing, heard nothing.
Then I felt the impact through my hands and the front of my ribs, bit my tongue so hard I could taste blood.
Black smoke rose over the horizon.
“Oh no,” Mrs. Parsall gasped.
I scrambled to my feet, began to run. I heard Mrs. Parsall behind me, the jingle of her purse strap. I dimly registered her voice shouting into her cell phone. I ran toward the fire, across the grass. I swung myself up and over the barbed-wire fence, mindless of the scratching on my hands and in my skirt.
I plunged into the stalks of corn, taller than me, following the smell of smoke and the distant crackle of fire. I was conscious of the brittle yellow stalks tearing at me as I passed and realized that they were too flammable this far into the season. If the fire got loose in the corn, we’d have no way to stop it.
But my immediate concern was the people on the helicopter.
I ripped through the field and shoved aside blackened stalks of corn to view the site of the crash. The heat shimmered in the air, causing my eyes to tear up. I lifted my apron to cover my nose against the smell of oily smoke.
Fire seethed above me in a black and orange plume, curling around the husk of the dead helicopter. The bent and broken tail jutted out from the ground at an odd angle. The cockpit had broken open, flames streaming through the broken glass.
And I swore I saw something moving inside.
