Good morning, everyone!  It's Thursday, and you know what that means -- a new voice (sometimes just to me) for me to share with you.  Please welcome author Liia Ann White, who's here today to talk about her new release, Dark Waters.  (I'm seriously liking this cover, by the way.  It's gorgeous!)

Dark Waters
Liia Ann White

Randor is a Fae assassin. As the most feared military officer in the Faery Realm, he only got out by striking a deal with the late King to become an assassin for hire. Something he was only able to do because of his place as adopted family member. When he’s ordered to kidnap the Unseelie Faery Princess and deliver her to the Seelie Queen, he doesn’t think twice, until he sees his target. Adora. Unseelie Princess. Most beautiful being in existence and feared witch warrior and his soul mate. Disobeying orders is something he’s never done before. But when he brings her into the Human Realm; his home, he has no regrets. Until his Elvish friend, Kiel, disapproves and an unexpected attack raises questions about his loyalties. The only way that could have happened was if Kiel tipped off the Queen's witch, Maleficent.

Adora was fearless, powerful and intensely unhappy. Until she was kidnapped by a mysterious stranger, who happens to be her half human, half Seelie soul mate. After being attacked, Adora, fearing she'd lose Randor, admits her feelings for her soul mate. The two of them just need to find a way they can survive together - away from the feuding kingdoms. Entering the Seelie castle, under a pretense of needing the witch's help to bind Adora's immense power, they ask for Maleficent, whom they plan to eliminate so she can no longer track them.

When all hell breaks loose, they're involved in a fight including the witch, Kiel and the Queen. A fight that not all of them will survive.

I asked Liia Ann to talk to us about her inspiration for the story.  Here's what she had to say:

Thanks so much for having me today!  (You're welcome, Liia)

When I saw this topic request for a blog post I beamed. She wanted to know what the inspiration for Dark Waters was. Well, there is about five different ways I can answer that, so here goes…

I’ve always loved fantasy. When done well, fantasy is my favourite genre. But there is a lot of it out now, books, movies, TV shows, that just don’t do it for me. If a fantasy book has not enough or too much description, I feel very disconnected from the plot. I’d had my own little fantasy series running around in my head for a while now and the opportunity came up for me to finally write a fantasy romance.

If you’ve read anything about me, you might know all my book ideas come from dreams. I have nightmares, vivid dreams and plain old weird dreams every single night. One night Adora appeared to me, with the basic appearance of a 21st century She-Ra (yes He-Man’s sister) in combat gear. She was tough yet vulnerable. Beautiful yet down to earth. And graceful yet deadly. She was everything I love in a heroine.

Several dreams followed with the appearance of Randor, the super sexy assassin, the outlay of the worlds they lived in, colours, trees, plants and buildings. I love blues, purples and greens – basically any cool colour, so that’s what I incorporated into the world. All the flora is a shade of blue or purple with green leaves and grass surrounding them.

When I write a book, it plays out in my head as a film, so I try to include all the aspects that I see in my book.

As for my inspiration for Randor? Who better than the always hot Ian Somerhalder as my favourite book character – Damon Salvatore :)

Let's take a peek at where her imagination led, shall we?

Adora awoke lying on a cold, hard, stone floor. Her head ached and throbbed. What happened to her? She left the feast, headed for her quarters and...nothing. Her mind was completely blank.

So what was she doing on a floor? Sitting up, Adora rubbed her head and found she was shackled. Both her wrists and ankles were bound in iron cuffs. The metal shimmered with green energy. They’d been charmed, no doubt with a captivity spell.

Good gods, what am I supposed to do?

It was no use trying to free herself. Captivity spells were almost impossible to break without the proper words. Wait, could she pull the chains out of the wall?

Jumping to her feet, Adora stepped back until the chains were tight. They were attached by one hook embedded into the wall.

This should be easy.

Grasping the cold iron chains, she gave a mighty yank. The instant she did, pain shot up her arms. Adora hunched and winced as the cuffs around her wrists tightened, digging into her skin.

“The more you struggle, the tighter they become.” A deep male voice cut the silence around her.

She spun to find a man she didn’t recognise standing at the door of her small cell. He was tall and lean with muscle that she didn’t doubt held immense strength. His sky blue eyes shone in contrast with his tanned skin and brown hair. While this man was obviously Fae, there was something different about him. Something else emitted through his aura.

A smirk spread across his full lips as he took a step toward her.

Refusing to back away, she straightened and stood still. She was Princess Adora, first in line for the throne the Seelie Court and fearless warrior in the Seelie army. People feared her. She feared nothing.

“So, Princess,” he spoke as he continued to slowly approach her. “I’m supposed to deliver you to the Unseelie queen.”

Adora’s breath caught in her throat. The Unseelie queen had tried, many times, to invade the kingdom. But her soldiers never made it past the gates.

“But,” the stranger continued, “I think I’ll keep her waiting. Just for a little while.”

Adora cocked her head. What kind of soldier disobeyed his queen? “Who are you?”

Hi everyone!  Power outages about here on the homestead with this winter snow blast - our first of the year. But the upside is, it's beginning to look a lot like...

Anyway, please welcome Jerrie Alexander to the blog today.  She's talking about her book, The Green-Eyed Doll, which I think would be a great choice for a new Kindle or a last-minute holiday add-on!

The Green-Eyed Doll

Catherine McCoy is running from her past. She's been on the move for a year, hiding the secret and guilt in her heart. When she lands in small-town Texas and meets Sheriff Matt Ballard, he ignites a flame she thought lost forever.

Matt has scars of his own. He left the big city after an undercover operation went bad and his partner was killed. Now, as Matt hunts for a serial killer who paints his victims like porcelain dolls, Catherine becomes a safe haven for him. Two tortured souls finding comfort in each other's arms—until he uncovers her secret, and their bond of trust is broken.

When Catherine disappears, Matt races to find her, fearing the murderer has found his next green-eyed doll. But the killer has a surprise coming. Catherine will fight to the death before she'll be a victim. But will her determination be enough?

Jerrie's brought Matt and Catherine to the blog today to talk about their Christmas plans.  Let's see what this exciting couple is up to!

Claire, thank you for inviting me over. I appreciate the opportunity to introduce you and your readers to Catherine McCoy and Sheriff Matt Ballard. If everyone's comfortable, let's get started.

Jerrie: "Tell us about this year's Christmas plans."

Catherine: "Christmas time in Texas can mean light snow, sheets of ice, or 70-degree days. Thank goodness, it's cooled off enough to kill a few mosquitoes. We're getting a tree this weekend."

Matt: "That's correct, and maybe you can help me convince her there's nowhere around here to cut our own tree! We can buy one right off a lot here in town."

Catherine: "Stop that. People will think you're a scrooge. We have tree farms, so what if they're not close by." She drops a hand on his knee and pats. "Don't you want a fresh tree for our first Christmas?"

Matt: His gaze drops to his leg. "I want you to be happy. So, if we have to drive a hundred miles to get the right tree...so be it."

Catherine: "See, he's not gruff all the time."

Jerrie: "Will you have family over?"

Matt: "Both our parents are gone," he answered quickly. "Catherine's brother sent his regrets. The only family I have is Catherine and Benedict," he said with a chuckle.

Catherine: "That's Matt's dog. He follows him everywhere." She brightens, and her green-eyes sparkle. "Ash Hunter isn't blood family, but he'll join us for the holiday. He helped save my life. Oh, that reminds me. I have to buy him a gift."

Matt: Matt made a scoffing sound. "You saved yourself, but it will be fun having him visit. He's a good friend."

Jerrie: "What's for lunch Christmas day?"

Catherine: "I'm a decent cook." She glanced at Matt, waiting until he nodded his agreement. "We're having old-fashioned turkey and cornbread dressing. My mama's recipe was simple and delicious. Matt's requested sweet-potato pie, which means I'm on the hunt for an easy recipe. You wouldn't happen to have one. Would you?"

Jerrie: "I do. I'll email it to you. Have you bought presents for each other?"

Matt: "Can't tell you with her in the room. She's already about to pester me to death." He leans close and whispers, "New eel skin boots and a weekend in San Antonio."

Jerrie: I whisper back in his ear, "Your secret is safe with me."

Catherine: "Awe. No fair." She crinkled her nose at Matt. "I'm a last minute kind of shopper, but I have a couple of special things in mind."

Jerrie: "So you're staying at home?"

Catherine: "Absolutely. We remodeled the inside of Matt's house. He did the carpentry, and I shopped for furniture. Got decorations for the inside and out while I was buying."

Matt: "It will be a small, quiet Christmas, but I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be than at home. The crowd will grow in time. Someday the yard will be full of kids." He rested his hand on Catherine's stomach. "Right?"

Catherine: "Right." Her smile was a cross between impish and angelic.

Sounds lovely, quaint and romantic all at the same time! Thanks for stopping by, all!  Let's take a peek at these two in action.

“Not to be nosey, but do you have any clues? You know...leads?” She turned and leaned back against the counter.

Sitting in the chair, wearing a black Go Rodeo T-shirt, jeans, and alligator boots, the last thing Matt looked like was a sheriff. Bull rider? You bet. Maybe a cattle rancher. But the one question about the murders changed his demeanor and posture. The shift from sexy, adorable hunk to serious, defender of the public was instantaneous. Catherine was back to licking her lips.

“I wish I could say yes. Truth is every female in the county is in danger. Married or single, it doesn’t seem to matter. I believe both women knew this man. Maybe not friends, but they recognized him. He could be the mailman, the guy at the gas station, anybody.”

“Even JC?” He’d befriended her, and she hoped Matt’s answer was no.

“Maybe.” He dragged his hand across the dark stubble on his face. “He had a relationship with Julia Drummond, and he knew Annie.”

“You’ll catch him. I know it.” Her gut coiled at the thought Matt had been injured. Should she ask about the scar? They’d discussed a few personal issues, but the last thing she wanted was to push him. “Can I ask something that’s none of my business?”

“Sure. Coffee’s not ready.”

“The scar on your back. What happened?” He shifted his gaze away from her, and his shoulders stiffened. She regretted giving into curiosity. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked.”

Jerrie lives in Texas, loves sunshine, children’s laughter, sugar (human and granulated), and researching for her heroes and heroines.

Good morning, readers!  Please welcome, Gabrielle Bisset, who's here today to talk about her novel, BLOOD BETRAYED.  Look at that cover, folks!!

Blood Betrayed

I am everything forbidden. I am vampire.

Haunted by betrayal, Saint hides in the human world, giving his heart to no one and finding the only solace from his past in the arms of human women. Now as the Archons begin their takeover of the vampire world, this Son of Navarus has been marked for death.

Summoned to defeat the Archons by the world that shunned him, Saint must face his past and Solenne, the woman he loved and lost a century ago, for only in accepting her will his body and soul finally find salvation.

I asked Gabrielle to bring along her hero today, and it looks like we get to meet him.  So with much ado, I am turning it over to her and Saint.   Thanks Claire for having me here today at your blog. It's a pleasure to be here. I'm joined by the hero from my book, Blood Betrayed, today.

Gabrielle: Saint, thank you for joining me here today. It's great to see you again.

Saint: It's my pleasure, Gabrielle.

Gabrielle: Let's jump right in. Tell the readers something about you.

Saint: I'm a vampire, turned in 1916 during the First World War. I'm also one of the Sons of Navarus, a group of vampires responsible for making sure the Archons don't turn our world into some police state.

Gabrielle: Blood Betrayed, your story, is a romance, overall. Tell us about the heroine, Solenne.

Saint: Solenne and I knew each other years ago. She's my brother's vampire, turned shortly after he and I were made vampire. Let's just say Solenne is unlike any other woman on Earth.

Gabrielle: Hmmm...that sounds like a compliment. From what I know of you, you're pretty stingy with those. She must be something pretty special.

Saint: (simply grins)

Gabrielle: Okay, I see I'm not going to get anything more out of you on that. Let's do something different. I'm going to ask you some questions and you tell me what you want to about each.

Saint: (winks) Give it your best shot.

Gabrielle: What's your background?

Saint: I was born in Ireland. I was turned vampire in France at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Gabrielle: What are your stats?

Saint: (grins seductively) Stats? Oh, it's that kind of interview. Okay. I'm 6'3", weigh around 215, and have brown eyes and brown hair. Is this going to turn into one of those Playgirl things? Am I going to have to tell you my turn offs and turn ons?

Gabrielle: You could, if you like.

Saint: I like red wine, eat healthy, work out, so I like women who appreciate that. I like women who like romance and candlelight. I guess I'm just old fashioned at heart.

Gabrielle: Are you a hand holder or a man who puts his arm around a woman's waist when he walks with her?

Saint: I'm an arm around the waist man.

Gabrielle: Okay, here are a few more. Are you a bar soap guy or body wash guy?

Saint: I don't care, but it's always better when someone else is lathering me up.

Gabrielle: I noticed when you walked in you smelled incredible. What cologne are you wearing?

Saint: It's Gucci Guilty Intense.

Gabrielle: It's delicious. I love it!

Saint: Thanks. It's a new favorite of mine. I've worn Hugo Boss for years, but I thought this might be a nice change.

Gabrielle: I don't remember Vasilije wearing any cologne when we sat down to talk. Do vampires usually wear it?

Saint: Vasilije is the type of man who thinks he doesn't need it because he always smells of sex and alcohol. I like to think I'm a little more civilized than him.

Gabrielle: Okay, what about your favorite fragrance for women?

Saint: I don't have a favorite, but I think perfume should enhance a woman's natural scent. That's always a huge turn on.

Gabrielle: One last question: I know you enjoy being a vampire, but is there one thing you miss about being human?

Saint: I think I miss watching the sunrise over the rolling countryside of Ireland. I remember it being like something out of a picture, but as time goes by, the memory begins to fade.

Gabrielle: Thanks, Saint. I love that idea. It's been great sitting down with you again. Keep safe and next time maybe you and Solenne can sit down with me.

Saint: It's my pleasure. I'll see what I can do about Solenne joining us next time.

Thank you, Gabrielle, for bringing him by today -- he's pretty tempting!   Let's take a peek at Saint in action, real quick.

~~@~~

Looking around the eighteenth century French country house, Saint saw that little had changed since the last time he'd been there. Expensively furnished, Solenne's home had been some important sire's until she'd decided that the French countryside offered little of the excitement an ancient vampire craved. At least that was the story Solenne had told. Who knew if it were true.

As he stared up at the crystal chandelier above his head, he said what he wished would be the last words he'd have to say to her. "Just tell me where my room is and where I can work out."

Solenne stood staring at him, and he felt her eyes boring holes through him.

"Saint, I'd hoped we could put the past behind us to work together. Can we at least talk?"

He lowered his gaze to meet hers and saw ocean blue eyes wide with hope staring back at him. That she could think that giving him some doe-eyed look and meaningless words would be enough to erase everything that had happened only made him more enraged about the situation.

"I'm not interested in talking or taking some stroll down memory lane. Just point me to my room and where I can work out."

The fiery look that instantly filled her eyes showed she was the same Solenne from all those years ago. He knew that oh-so-helpful woman from Vasilije's was just an act.

"It doesn't have to be like this. I'd hoped you'd be a bigger man and see how we could work together. I see you're the same man you've always been, unfortunately."

Good Morning Everyone!

Today I'd like to welcome Kenya Wright, author of what looks to be fantastic, Fire Baptized. I confess, I took one look at the cover of this book, read the blurb and though to myself, "I have to have her on the blog!" So I'm really, really excited to be saying, "Check out this smokin' hot book!"

Fire Baptized

Since the 1970’s humans have forced supernaturals to live in caged cities. Silver brands embedded in their foreheads identify them by species: a full moon for Vampires, a crescent moon for Shifters, a pair of wings for Fairies, and the list goes on, for each supernatural species has been tagged and categorized by humans.

Lanore Vesta is marked with a silver X, the brand of Mixbreeds, second-class citizens shunned by society. She stays to herself, revealing her ability to create fire only during emergencies. All she wants to do is graduate college and stop having to steal to survive. But when she stumbles upon a murder in progress, she catches the attention of a supernatural killer. Now all she wants is to stop finding dead bodies in her apartment.

Enlisting help from her Were-cheetah ex-boyfriend Meshach and a new mysterious friend named Zulu, she is steered through the habitat’s raunchy nightlife. But their presence sometimes proves to be more burden than help, as they fight for her attention.

While the corpses pile up, and the scent of blood fills the air, Lanore is left wondering: will she find the psycho or die trying?

I asked Kenya if she'd talk about her setting -- what made her choose the 1970s, and so forth. I'm going to give the floor over to her now, and let her entertain us.

Historical Possibilities: The importance of creating an urban fantasy world’s history.

Before an urban fantasy story can be formed the world’s history should be known. In this genre, supernaturals tend to either secretly or knowingly exist among humans. If the magical species secretly lives around humans, then you must know why the supernaturals have chosen to hide? If this species is powerful, why haven’t they just taken control of the world?

Additionally, if the supernaturals knowingly exist among humans, when did the humans discover this? What happened to bring this about? Regardless of either direction, you should have a clear history formed in order to make the world believable for the reader. Asking yourself what happened, before you create this history is a great method.

Supernaturals Secretly Exist Among Humans

The urban fantasy genre has increased and expanded in the last years. Story explanations for why supernaturals hide their identities from humans have been recycled in hundreds of novels. Therefore, new authors should seek to create a richer history for their world that isn’t cliché. Perhaps some supernaturals publicly announced their existence and were killed. Now the other magical species fear they will be killed too and so they conceal their powers. Anything is possible when developing a fantasy world’s history.

Additionally, it is always a good idea to read other writers that have successfully explained why there supes hide. In Patricia Brigg’s Mercedes series, her fairies publicly revealed themselves, but the other supernaturals remained hidden, waiting to see the humans’ reactions. In Regan Hastings’s Awakening series, the witches have historically been hunted, there are government probes for people who have powers, and some women don’t even know they are witches.

Supernaturals Knowingly Exist Among Humans

If your humans know about supernaturals then you definitely need to develop a history that explains the humans’ awareness. Perhaps, the supernaturals were revealed by accident or through an epidemic. In Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, there was a major disease that spread in the world. All of her magical creatures were immune to the disease. Most of the humans died, leaving a large supernatural population.

Perhaps, humans and supernaturals have always existed together. You should still develop a history for your world. Were their wars among the supernaturals and humans? Do they coexist together or are they segregated in their own countries? Was there oppression or slavery by or in either group? Answering these questions will set your mind on its way to developing an amazing history that will make your world more believable.

How I Created My World’s History

I believe that if supernaturals were revealed the government would shift into fear mode and then kill, imprison, and test the magical species. When I decided to write Fire Baptized, I toyed with that belief. I considered various possibilities for containing supernaturals, but a caged city continued to pop in my mind. I was pretty nervous about executing a believable story. I mean how could powerful beings allow humans to force them to live in such restricted surroundings? Therefore, although my story begins within the caged city, I spent several months creating the history of my world.

I asked myself several questions: When were the supernaturals exposed? What happened once they were revealed? Who decided to put them in cages? Why did the supernaturals allow themselves to be caged?

When were the supernaturals exposed?

I am currently in law school and have a degree in sociology. Civil injustice is a fun topic for me. I believe the 70s was full of brave people organizing and fighting inequality. African Americans, women, and homosexual groups all organized against discrimination. Additionally college students held anti- Vietnam War demonstrations all over the country. So for me, the 70s was a perfect period to begin my world’s history.

In Fire Baptized, supernaturals existed within all those social groups. They marched, protested, and rioted while keeping their species identity a secret. The magical species are revealed from the government’s video monitoring of the Black Panther Party, which happened to be a large group of black fur-coated shapeshifters. Tapes are exposed displaying many of the party members shifting into animal form.

What happened once they were revealed?

I created a timeline from the revelation of shapeshifters to the present day status of caged supernatural cities. I imagined several Supernatural-Human wars, magical refugee camps sprouting all across the world, concentration camps where humans tested on magical creatures, and groups like PETA protesting the government’s treatment of these beings.

Who decided to put them in cages?

Why did the supernaturals allow themselves to be caged? In the end, the humans won. Governments had conducted massive illegal testing on supernaturals to discover their weaknesses. With this knowledge they designed weapons that eventually caused many deaths. The supernaturals that weren’t already restricted to concentration camps gave up their fighting or hid. A World Summit was held where the most powerful countries decided to build supernatural caged cities all over the world. A large part of the countries’ reasoning was to ease pressure from PETA, United Species (a group I made up), and many citizens who believed that the war was inhumane.

At the end of creating my history, my story actually reshaped and expanded into a new plot line. My characters became more developed. Cool additions like Supe-Human Memorial Day and making some of my characters veterans from the wars were just some of the interesting results from spending time on my world’s history. Due to this, I definitely believe that forming a world’s history is a significant step in the novel writing process.

Kenya Wright always knew she would be famous since the ripe old age of six when she sung the Michael Jackson thriller song in her bathroom mirror. She has tried her hand at many things from enlisting in the Navy for six years as a Persian-Farsi linguist to being a nude model at an art university.

However, writing has been the only constant love in her life.

Now Kenya is publishing her first book, Fire Baptized, the urban fantasy novel she always wanted to read. This novel is the first book in a series.

Will she succeed? Of course.

For she has been coined The Urban Fantasy Queen, the Super Iconic Writer of this Age, The Lyrical Genius of Our Generation. Granted, these are all terms coined by her, within the private walls of her bathroom as she still sings the Michael Jackson thriller song.

Kenya Wright currently resides in Miami with her three amazing, overactive children, a supportive, gorgeous husband, and three cool black cats that refuse to stop sleeping on Kenya’s head at night.
