Good morning, everyone!  It's Thursday, and you know what that means -- a new voice (sometimes just to me) for me to share with you.  Please welcome author Liia Ann White, who's here today to talk about her new release, Dark Waters.  (I'm seriously liking this cover, by the way.  It's gorgeous!)

Dark Waters
Liia Ann White

Randor is a Fae assassin. As the most feared military officer in the Faery Realm, he only got out by striking a deal with the late King to become an assassin for hire. Something he was only able to do because of his place as adopted family member. When he’s ordered to kidnap the Unseelie Faery Princess and deliver her to the Seelie Queen, he doesn’t think twice, until he sees his target. Adora. Unseelie Princess. Most beautiful being in existence and feared witch warrior and his soul mate. Disobeying orders is something he’s never done before. But when he brings her into the Human Realm; his home, he has no regrets. Until his Elvish friend, Kiel, disapproves and an unexpected attack raises questions about his loyalties. The only way that could have happened was if Kiel tipped off the Queen's witch, Maleficent.

Adora was fearless, powerful and intensely unhappy. Until she was kidnapped by a mysterious stranger, who happens to be her half human, half Seelie soul mate. After being attacked, Adora, fearing she'd lose Randor, admits her feelings for her soul mate. The two of them just need to find a way they can survive together - away from the feuding kingdoms. Entering the Seelie castle, under a pretense of needing the witch's help to bind Adora's immense power, they ask for Maleficent, whom they plan to eliminate so she can no longer track them.

When all hell breaks loose, they're involved in a fight including the witch, Kiel and the Queen. A fight that not all of them will survive.

I asked Liia Ann to talk to us about her inspiration for the story.  Here's what she had to say:

Thanks so much for having me today!  (You're welcome, Liia)

When I saw this topic request for a blog post I beamed. She wanted to know what the inspiration for Dark Waters was. Well, there is about five different ways I can answer that, so here goes…

I’ve always loved fantasy. When done well, fantasy is my favourite genre. But there is a lot of it out now, books, movies, TV shows, that just don’t do it for me. If a fantasy book has not enough or too much description, I feel very disconnected from the plot. I’d had my own little fantasy series running around in my head for a while now and the opportunity came up for me to finally write a fantasy romance.

If you’ve read anything about me, you might know all my book ideas come from dreams. I have nightmares, vivid dreams and plain old weird dreams every single night. One night Adora appeared to me, with the basic appearance of a 21st century She-Ra (yes He-Man’s sister) in combat gear. She was tough yet vulnerable. Beautiful yet down to earth. And graceful yet deadly. She was everything I love in a heroine.

Several dreams followed with the appearance of Randor, the super sexy assassin, the outlay of the worlds they lived in, colours, trees, plants and buildings. I love blues, purples and greens – basically any cool colour, so that’s what I incorporated into the world. All the flora is a shade of blue or purple with green leaves and grass surrounding them.

When I write a book, it plays out in my head as a film, so I try to include all the aspects that I see in my book.

As for my inspiration for Randor? Who better than the always hot Ian Somerhalder as my favourite book character – Damon Salvatore :)

Let's take a peek at where her imagination led, shall we?

Adora awoke lying on a cold, hard, stone floor. Her head ached and throbbed. What happened to her? She left the feast, headed for her quarters and...nothing. Her mind was completely blank.

So what was she doing on a floor? Sitting up, Adora rubbed her head and found she was shackled. Both her wrists and ankles were bound in iron cuffs. The metal shimmered with green energy. They’d been charmed, no doubt with a captivity spell.

Good gods, what am I supposed to do?

It was no use trying to free herself. Captivity spells were almost impossible to break without the proper words. Wait, could she pull the chains out of the wall?

Jumping to her feet, Adora stepped back until the chains were tight. They were attached by one hook embedded into the wall.

This should be easy.

Grasping the cold iron chains, she gave a mighty yank. The instant she did, pain shot up her arms. Adora hunched and winced as the cuffs around her wrists tightened, digging into her skin.

“The more you struggle, the tighter they become.” A deep male voice cut the silence around her.

She spun to find a man she didn’t recognise standing at the door of her small cell. He was tall and lean with muscle that she didn’t doubt held immense strength. His sky blue eyes shone in contrast with his tanned skin and brown hair. While this man was obviously Fae, there was something different about him. Something else emitted through his aura.

A smirk spread across his full lips as he took a step toward her.

Refusing to back away, she straightened and stood still. She was Princess Adora, first in line for the throne the Seelie Court and fearless warrior in the Seelie army. People feared her. She feared nothing.

“So, Princess,” he spoke as he continued to slowly approach her. “I’m supposed to deliver you to the Unseelie queen.”

Adora’s breath caught in her throat. The Unseelie queen had tried, many times, to invade the kingdom. But her soldiers never made it past the gates.

“But,” the stranger continued, “I think I’ll keep her waiting. Just for a little while.”

Adora cocked her head. What kind of soldier disobeyed his queen? “Who are you?”

Please welcome author Meggan Connors to the blog today, and her new Western Steampunk Romance.  Did you hear that?  I'll say it again.  Steampunk.

Everybody squeal with me.  (And for you just visiting the blog today, I'm a huge steampunk fan.)

She's about to become a pawn in a brutal game between nations...

The American Civil War has raged for more than ten years. The outcast daughter of a famous inventor, Jessica White has struggled to salvage what little remains of her life. Then, one cold winter night, the lover she'd given up for dead returns, claiming the Union Army bought the plans for her father's last invention. But he's not the only one who lays claim to the device, for the Confederacy wants the invention as well. Both sides will kill to have it.

...And only he can save her.

As an agent for the Union Army, Luke Bradshaw is a man who will use whomever and whatever is at his disposal in order to complete his mission. An attack by Confederate soldiers ensures that Jessie will turn to him for help, but Luke can't help but wonder about the secrets she keeps--and if those secrets will ultimately prove fatal.

Her cheeks heated and she sniffed. “I wouldn’t try the patience of my very generous benefactor, if I were you. I might also mention a bath could make your presence a little more tolerable. You’re lucky I didn’t sic Muha on you.”

Luke looked at the wolf, who thumped her graying tail in eager canine devotion. “You wouldn’t bite me, would you, old girl?” Scratching her head, he caught Jessie’s eye. “See, she still loves me.”

“Well, that’s one of us.”

“Right.” He dug into the pocket of his vest, removed a small, folded envelope, and extended it to her. “I brought you something.”

The paper trembled, and it took Jessie a moment to realize his hands shook.

She folded her hands in her lap. “I don’t want anything from you, except your promise that tomorrow you’ll leave and you won’t come back.”

“Can’t promise you that, but I can give you this.” He shoved the envelope at her.

“Don’t overstay your welcome, Bradshaw.”

“I always do.”

A nervous laugh escaped before she could stop it, and she took the letter from Luke’s outstretched hand. It was well worn and wrinkled, the edges charred, as if it had been rescued from a fire.

She ran her hands over the paper, and she sensed smoke and the heat of flames.

With shaking hands, she opened the envelope. She wasn’t sure what she had expected to find, but it wasn’t this. It wasn’t a photograph and a flood of memories.

Two young men. Union soldiers. Luke, clean-shaven and an older version of the boy she remembered, smiled broadly at the camera, his free arm around the shoulders of the young man standing next to him.

Gideon. His black hair and eyes, skin and high cheekbones showed the native blood he and Jessie shared. His mouth was set in a somber line, but she recognized the mirth in his eyes. Luke had never failed to amuse her brother.

On the bottom of the photograph, written in Gideon’s strong, precise hand, was, Me and Luke. October 28, 1867.

The day he died.

She put the photograph down beside her and turned to the second piece of paper, and her throat tightened as she began to read.

Jessie,

We leave for South Carolina today. Luke and I are assigned to different airships, but we’re both expected to be there by this afternoon. We don’t expect much resistance. There are rumors the Rebs have developed a weapon against our airships, but I’ve been working on something with Pop’s blue silver alloy. If it works, the Rebs will never be able to take us out of the sky. I only wish Luke were on my ship.

Don’t worry about us. Any day now, and we’ll be back where we belong. Luke sends his love. I’ll take care of him for you—don’t you worry. You take care of yourself and Pop.

–Gideon

The letter they’d received from Gideon’s commanding officer had assured her father that her brother had died quickly when his ship had plummeted to the earth and burst into flames. She had pretended to believe the lies for her father’s sake.

She traced Gideon’s words with the tip of her finger, trying to feel some remnant of her brother’s presence in the strong lines of his penmanship. New pain built in her chest when she realized her efforts were futile—his energy wasn’t there. His letter contained his words, but no trace of him.

“I always meant to come back.” Luke’s voice sounded rough. “I walked all the way back to the crash site, looking for him or something of his. I was given this. I’ve carried it ever since. I always meant to give it to you.”

She set the photograph in her lap. She memorized this last image of her brother, dressed as a solider with his best friend by his side.

Luke put his hand on her shoulder.

She flinched. “Don’t. You should have sent this when you found it.”

He dropped his hand. “I wanted to give you the letter in person.”

“Go away.” The words came out strangled.

“Jessie—”

“I wish you had been the one to die that day.”

This one small memento of her brother ripped her open and tore out her heart all over again. The pain was as raw as the day she’d learned of his death.

“You have no idea how many times I’ve wished the exact same thing.”

“Hello there.”

Janet turned around at the unexpected sound of a male voice.

“Hi.” Janet remembered the IT guy she had found in her office the day before. It was impossible to forget him. She had never seen anyone who was so incongruously good-looking and clumsy at the same time.

“It’s Janet, right?” The IT guy focused his blue-gray eyes on her. “I’m Dean.”

“Yes, I remember,” Janet lied, making a mental note to commit Dean’s name to memory. “Do you work on this floor?”

“Yep.” Dean nodded. “My desk is on the trading floor – this way if any of the traders need help, I can be summoned to their rescue.”

“Sounds terribly important.”

“It is.” Dean puffed out his chest. “Not really.” He shook his head. “The other day I had to explain to a guy that his monitor was black because he forgot to turn his computer on.”

“Oh…” Janet laughed a bit louder than she intended. “I’m sorry.”

“Is that your oatmeal?”

“Yes. I’m sort of on a diet,” Janet blurted out.

“I think it’s about to run over.” Dean reached for the microwave and popped it open just as the oatmeal was about to topple over the rim of the cup. “Here you are.” Dean set the oatmeal on the kitchen counter. “And if
I may add, you don’t need to be on a diet, Janet.”

“Thanks.” Janet blushed – was Dean flirting with her? If he was, she could not say that she minded it, except for the fact that she seemed to have forgotten what it was like to flirt with a cute guy. I’m sort of on a diet. Nicely done. And Dean was not even that good-looking; he was just mildly cute. What was going to happen to her if she were up against a real stunner? Would she unravel completely and blabber uncontrollably?

“Well, Janet, have a good one. I’ve got to get back to my charges. Who knows, while I was away, all kinds of disasters could have struck – knocked-out power cords or coffee spilled on keyboards.”

“Sounds serious. Good luck.” Janet grinned. “And thanks for rescuing my oatmeal.”

“You’re welcome, Janet.” The corners of Dean’s mouth lifted in a smile as his eyes met Janet’s for a moment. “I’ll see you later.”

“Bye,” Janet mouthed. Thanks for rescuing my oatmeal. She just brimmed with charm and mystique this morning. Enough with this nonsense, Janet snapped at herself. Her third day on the job, and instead of focusing on her work, she was flirting – correction -- miserably failing at flirting – with idle IT guys, and, how could she forget, lascivious attorneys. Her awkward encounter with Tom Wyman still made her cringe. Well, it takes practice to get better at things, Janet reasoned, so perhaps she should practice on Dean Snider for now.

Back in her office, Janet looked over the chart of Bostoff Securities’ corporate structure that Tom Wyman had given her yesterday. There were about ten different entities. The structure seemed odd to say the least, but Tom had cited a specific business purpose for each entity. His reasoning had made perfect sense when Tom had been explaining the set-up to Janet, but the moment he departed from her office, leaving a trail of masculine cologne, questions began to stir in her mind.

Good morning, everyone!  Please take a few minutes to welcome Award-Winning Author, p.m. terrell, who is sharing her new book with us, Dylan's Song, and going to talk to us a little bit about my favorite place--Ireland!

Dylan's Song
by: p.m. terrell

Dylan Maguire returns to his native Ireland with psychic spy Vicki Boyd. Their mission: to locate and extract a CIA Agent who disappeared in Dublin while on the trail of a known terrorist. But when Dylan receives word that his grandmother is dying, he is plunged into a past he thought he’d left behind forever. His mission and the dark secrets he’d sought to keep hidden begin to merge into an underworld that could cost him his life. He must now confront his past demons and the real reason he left Ireland—while Vicki harbors a secret of her own.

* * *
Suspense Magazine says, “p.m.terrell’s writing is powerfully written and masterfully suspenseful; you have to hang on for the ride of your life.” Midwest Book Review says the Black Swamp Mysteries series is “page-turning action, unforgettable characters, breathtaking descriptions and unexpected plot twists.” And syndicated reviewer Marcia Freespirit says the series is “riveting, spell-binding, sexy and intense!”
* * *

So tell us, p. m.,  Why Ireland?

WHY IRELAND?

My father was always deeply involved in our genealogy so I learned from an early age that my ancestors had immigrated to America from Ireland and Scotland. When my mother’s brother journeyed to Ireland and found that their roots also originated in Ireland, it cemented my affinity for the Emerald Isle.

But a few years ago, I began to plunge into my Irish heritage in more detail while writing Songbirds are Free, the true story of my ancestor, Mary Neely, who had been captured by Shawnee warriors in 1780 near Fort Nashborough (now Nashville, TN) and held in captivity for three years as a slave before she was able to escape and find her way home. She was Scot-Irish, one of my father’s ancestors, who had made the difficult journey from Ireland to make a new way of life in America. The result for Mary Neely and her immediate family was disastrous: both her parents, William and Margaret, were killed by Indians in separate raids, as well as her youngest brother. Only two out of ten children survived past the age of 35.

It captivated me how they could have left the only home they’d ever known to move to a country they had never seen before. Their descendants now number in the hundreds if not thousands, many of whom contacted me after the publication of Songbirds are Free and the subsequent book, River Passage.

When I began researching the plot for Vicki’s Key, the second book in the Black Swamp Mysteries series, it was important for Vicki to fall in love fast and hard for what she thought was “the perfect man.” Of course, no one and nothing is perfect, which added to the plot in that suspense/thriller. I researched what women thought of as the perfect man and discovered the number one most loved accent in the world is the Scottish; the second is the Irish and the third is Australian. I decided on an Irishman because the cadence is softer and more melodic than the Scots and they have a reputation for being good-natured, happy and humorous. I also knew very little about Australia to fill in the backstory of the character.

Dylan Maguire was supposed to make an appearance in only one book but I must have been a bit too good at making him “the perfect man” because the editors said he HAD to remain as a main character throughout the entire series. He’s by far the most beloved character I’ve created to date. He had come to America to care for an aging Laurel Maguire in Vicki’s Key and his background had remained mysterious through the first few books. I knew at some point I would have to take the reader to his homeland to discover the real mystery behind his desire to leave all he’d ever known to come to America.

I fell in love with the Irish backdrop so of course there will be more mysteries set there in future books.

See -- I'm not the only author who is enchanted with Ireland.  And I have to agree with p.m. on the Irish accent.  Mmm!

Let's take a peek, shall we?

“Why are you so adamant about not going back?” Vicki said. “I don’t understand.”

He strode to the back door. With his hand almost on the knob, he stopped abruptly and turned around to face them. “The flight is a hundred hours long.”

“It’s six hours,” Sam said.

“I’ll have jet lag for weeks!”

“Two days, tops.” Sam’s voice was becoming quizzical.

“Are you afraid of flying?” Vicki asked.

No!” he bellowed. He opened the kitchen door. “The weather there is atrocious!”

“I can’t believe you’re acting like this is such an inconvenience for you!” Vicki shouted.

“In me whole life,” he said as if he hadn’t heard her, “it’s rained once.” He held up his finger. “One time!”

“Really?” Vicki said. “Once?”

And it’s lasted for thirty years!” With that, he marched outside and slammed the door behind him.

Vicki and Sam stared at the door for a long moment without speaking. Then she turned to him. “I’m at a loss here.”

He continued staring at the kitchen door as if he hadn’t heard her.

“Do you know why he doesn’t want to see Ireland again?” Vicki asked.

“He can’t refuse a mission,” Sam said quietly. “You can’t pick and choose your missions in this line of work.”

Vicki turned to stand directly in front of him.

“Do you know,” she said in a stronger voice, “why he doesn’t want to see Ireland again?”

He looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.

“You know, don’t you?”

He looked away from her. His eyes roamed the kitchen as though he was searching for something. Vicki stood her ground until he said, “No. I have my suspicions; that’s all.”

Hello everyone!  It's snowing here in my hometown, and I can't think of a better way to warm up today, than to curl up with Stacy Gail's Savage Angel.  She's stopped by today to show off her newest release and to tell us a little about the super heroes we fall in love with, as well as the series, The Earth Angels.  She also has a giveaway today, so be sure to read through to the end!

Savage Angel
The Earth Angels, Book II
Carina Press

Feel nothing. Sara Savitch's personal mantra has been hard to live by ever since her torrid one-night stand with army doctor Gideon Mandeville. Descended from the Seraphim, angels known as heaven's soldiers, Sara may be an expert fighter, but she's an amateur when it comes to relationships.

Physically unharmed, but still battle-scarred, Gideon has returned to Dallas in the hopes of regaining his faith in humanity—and in himself. Instead he's walked into a nightmare. His father is on a serial killer's hit list, and has hired a personal bodyguard—the very woman who has haunted Gideon's dreams for a year.

As Sara works to build an impenetrable fortress around her client, she yearns to tear down the one around Gideon's heart. With his bitter rejection of warriors, will he ever be able to accept her true nature? Sara must find a way to trust Gideon with her secret as the killer closes in…

Stacy, the blog is all yours!

Super Powers, Old School-Style!

Before we begin, I’d like to thank Claire for allowing me to bounce onto her blog today to talk about my latest release, SAVAGE ANGEL, book 2 in The Earth Angels series published by Carina Press!

*stands up* Hi. My name is Stacy. And I’ve been a closet geek my whole life.  As a kid, I collected Hello Kitty and Smurfs (if they’re made anywhere other than Germany, DON’T BUY THEM, they have no value).  I can tell you who the original X-Men were, and that Han shot first.  Even better, my geekdom was shared by my brother, the quintessential comic book collector, complete with organized file boxes and plastic sleeves to keep them pristine.  And yeah, I read every single one of those suckers, whether he gave me permission or not!  Where was the harm?  I always put them back into their plastic sleeves. :P

Years ago, when we didn’t have work schedules, kids and deadlines hanging over our head (read: Adult Life), we got to talking about how cool it would be to have “super-powered heroes” from mythology (like Thor) make some kind of appearance in the modern-day world.  And that’s where my idea for the descendants of the original Nephilim first appeared.

Thousands of years ago there was supposedly a race of human-angel hybrids known as the Nephilim—a race that was wiped out by the Great Flood because they weren’t part of heaven’s plan.  But then Goliath, a descendant of the Nephilim, shows up a couple thousand years later, and his very existence proves to biblical scholars that some Nephilim escaped extinction, and procreated.  As a concept, I totally loved it!

In The Earth Angels series, I take this concept and go allllll out. I sat down and imagined in detail what the 21st-century descendants of various angels would be like if I were in charge of the universe.  Then I combined those ideas with the most popular themes of the paranormal world—a superhero, a soldier, a hero struggling with lost powers, and a lover-turned-fighter.  Then, I dreamed up what all paranormal protagonists need—a VILLAIN.  The 2nd story in The Earth Angels series, SAVAGE ANGEL, is the book that officially unveils this villainous threat to all the Nephilim—a threat that was only glimpsed in the first novella, NOBODY’S ANGEL (though I’m sure some sharp-eyed readers have spotted the bad guy by now ^_^).

Luckily Sara Savitch is the one who’s hot on the trail of the danger threatening them all, and no one is better suited to unleash otherworldly war on a vicious enemy.  Sara’s a descendant of the Seraphim, heaven’s soldiers, and hard-wired to protect everyone around her.  There’s no martial art she hasn’t mastered, and no weapon she can’t handle on an expert level.  But when it comes to social skills… oy.  She’s worse than all thumbs, the poor dear.  Her Achilles’ heel is Gideon Mandeville, an Army doctor fresh from the front lines who’s dealing with problems of his own.  Throw in white-hot attraction, a complicated history between these two and a serial killer that might have a demon in his closet, and things get crazy fast for Sara and Gideon.

Now that I’ve finished The Earth Angel series, I’m so thrilled I can now let my geek-flag fly openly and without shame.  There are more of us out there who love the paranormal than you might think, so go ahead and embrace you inner geek.  Come to find out, it’s the new cool.

Question:  Confession time!  Do you have absolute geek-out love for something you keep hidden from your friends and family?  (I think mine is still Hello Kitty :D )

Let's take a peek at Savage Angel real quick, then we'll get to the giveaway stuffs!

“Let’s make this quick,” she announced without preamble, heading over to the desk and gesturing an invitation toward the chairs on the opposite side of it. “I have a meeting waiting for me, along with about a fifty other things that need to get done before noon. And in future, I’d appreciate it if you would call and make an appointment the next time you want a face-to-face.”

“An appointment? For me?” Refusing to even look at the chairs she’d indicated, Gideon kept his distance and stayed by the windows, his expression so remote he looked as unapproachable as the moon. “Do you insist all your lovers do that, or is it just me?”

She hoped her swift intake of breath was something only she heard. “You’ve made it apparent we don’t have that kind of relationship and after yesterday, I’m forced to agree with you. You’re not my lover, or boyfriend, or even acquaintance. We’re strangers, and I have no problem keeping it that way.”

“Except for the small fact that strangers don’t usually have mind-blowing sex up against the garage wall, do they?”

Her fingers curled into her palms, and she wondered if her face looked as neon-red as it felt. “And here I was, thinking you’d forgotten about that.”

Hi everyone!  Power outages about here on the homestead with this winter snow blast - our first of the year. But the upside is, it's beginning to look a lot like...

Anyway, please welcome Jerrie Alexander to the blog today.  She's talking about her book, The Green-Eyed Doll, which I think would be a great choice for a new Kindle or a last-minute holiday add-on!

The Green-Eyed Doll

Catherine McCoy is running from her past. She's been on the move for a year, hiding the secret and guilt in her heart. When she lands in small-town Texas and meets Sheriff Matt Ballard, he ignites a flame she thought lost forever.

Matt has scars of his own. He left the big city after an undercover operation went bad and his partner was killed. Now, as Matt hunts for a serial killer who paints his victims like porcelain dolls, Catherine becomes a safe haven for him. Two tortured souls finding comfort in each other's arms—until he uncovers her secret, and their bond of trust is broken.

When Catherine disappears, Matt races to find her, fearing the murderer has found his next green-eyed doll. But the killer has a surprise coming. Catherine will fight to the death before she'll be a victim. But will her determination be enough?

Jerrie's brought Matt and Catherine to the blog today to talk about their Christmas plans.  Let's see what this exciting couple is up to!

Claire, thank you for inviting me over. I appreciate the opportunity to introduce you and your readers to Catherine McCoy and Sheriff Matt Ballard. If everyone's comfortable, let's get started.

Jerrie: "Tell us about this year's Christmas plans."

Catherine: "Christmas time in Texas can mean light snow, sheets of ice, or 70-degree days. Thank goodness, it's cooled off enough to kill a few mosquitoes. We're getting a tree this weekend."

Matt: "That's correct, and maybe you can help me convince her there's nowhere around here to cut our own tree! We can buy one right off a lot here in town."

Catherine: "Stop that. People will think you're a scrooge. We have tree farms, so what if they're not close by." She drops a hand on his knee and pats. "Don't you want a fresh tree for our first Christmas?"

Matt: His gaze drops to his leg. "I want you to be happy. So, if we have to drive a hundred miles to get the right tree...so be it."

Catherine: "See, he's not gruff all the time."

Jerrie: "Will you have family over?"

Matt: "Both our parents are gone," he answered quickly. "Catherine's brother sent his regrets. The only family I have is Catherine and Benedict," he said with a chuckle.

Catherine: "That's Matt's dog. He follows him everywhere." She brightens, and her green-eyes sparkle. "Ash Hunter isn't blood family, but he'll join us for the holiday. He helped save my life. Oh, that reminds me. I have to buy him a gift."

Matt: Matt made a scoffing sound. "You saved yourself, but it will be fun having him visit. He's a good friend."

Jerrie: "What's for lunch Christmas day?"

Catherine: "I'm a decent cook." She glanced at Matt, waiting until he nodded his agreement. "We're having old-fashioned turkey and cornbread dressing. My mama's recipe was simple and delicious. Matt's requested sweet-potato pie, which means I'm on the hunt for an easy recipe. You wouldn't happen to have one. Would you?"

Jerrie: "I do. I'll email it to you. Have you bought presents for each other?"

Matt: "Can't tell you with her in the room. She's already about to pester me to death." He leans close and whispers, "New eel skin boots and a weekend in San Antonio."

Jerrie: I whisper back in his ear, "Your secret is safe with me."

Catherine: "Awe. No fair." She crinkled her nose at Matt. "I'm a last minute kind of shopper, but I have a couple of special things in mind."

Jerrie: "So you're staying at home?"

Catherine: "Absolutely. We remodeled the inside of Matt's house. He did the carpentry, and I shopped for furniture. Got decorations for the inside and out while I was buying."

Matt: "It will be a small, quiet Christmas, but I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be than at home. The crowd will grow in time. Someday the yard will be full of kids." He rested his hand on Catherine's stomach. "Right?"

Catherine: "Right." Her smile was a cross between impish and angelic.

Sounds lovely, quaint and romantic all at the same time! Thanks for stopping by, all!  Let's take a peek at these two in action.

“Not to be nosey, but do you have any clues? You know...leads?” She turned and leaned back against the counter.

Sitting in the chair, wearing a black Go Rodeo T-shirt, jeans, and alligator boots, the last thing Matt looked like was a sheriff. Bull rider? You bet. Maybe a cattle rancher. But the one question about the murders changed his demeanor and posture. The shift from sexy, adorable hunk to serious, defender of the public was instantaneous. Catherine was back to licking her lips.

“I wish I could say yes. Truth is every female in the county is in danger. Married or single, it doesn’t seem to matter. I believe both women knew this man. Maybe not friends, but they recognized him. He could be the mailman, the guy at the gas station, anybody.”

“Even JC?” He’d befriended her, and she hoped Matt’s answer was no.

“Maybe.” He dragged his hand across the dark stubble on his face. “He had a relationship with Julia Drummond, and he knew Annie.”

“You’ll catch him. I know it.” Her gut coiled at the thought Matt had been injured. Should she ask about the scar? They’d discussed a few personal issues, but the last thing she wanted was to push him. “Can I ask something that’s none of my business?”

“Sure. Coffee’s not ready.”

“The scar on your back. What happened?” He shifted his gaze away from her, and his shoulders stiffened. She regretted giving into curiosity. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked.”

About the Author:

A student of  creative writing in her youth, Jerrie set aside her passion when life presented her with a John Wayne husband, and two wonderful children.  A career in logistics offered her the opportunity to travel to many beautiful locations in America, and she revisits them in her romantic suspense novels.

But the characters went with her, talked to her, and insisted she share their dark, sexy stories with others.  She writes alpha males and kick-ass women who weave their way through death and fear to emerge stronger because of, and on occasion in spite of, their love for each other.  She likes to torture people, make them suffer, and if they’re strong enough, they live happily ever after.

Jerrie lives in Texas, loves sunshine, children’s laughter, sugar (human and granulated), and researching for her heroes and heroines.

Please welcome Shelly Holt today!  She's talking about her new book Tasting Fire and the inspiration behind it!

Tasting Fire
Shelly Holt

Shape-shifters have always walked the earth. Shrouded in myth and folklore, hiding in the shadows, watching and waiting. Advances in modern science are now about to reveal them to the world. Kai Tenzin is the self appointed leader of the Pari people. He and his kind evolved from the most reclusive predators on earth. They live and hunt in the most fearsome and rugged terrain known to man, the Himalayas. Kai leaves his small village where the mountains touch the heavens, determined to do anything to protect his people. When he is forced to enlist the aid of the beautiful American scientist Dr. Rae Hales, the last thing he expects to find is a woman who will ensnare his heart and endanger them all. Their action-packed adventure will take them around the world to discover the truth behind the legends and reveal the future of humanity.

~~~~~
What spurred the idea?
Shelly Holt
After writing a childrens book and several short stories that did not sell, I did a great deal of research on what genres were actually selling well as e-books.  I decided that I would have a much better chance of success with a romance novel.  I was never much for historical romances myself and out of all the new romance genres that had emerged, my writing style would fit well with a paranormal romance.  I knew that to compete in a market that was saturated with shape-shifters, I would have to do something completely different.  I had already decided that I would not use magic in my world building, I felt as a writer I would be forced to develop a much stronger plot and place much more emphasis on character development if I put limits on myself as to how I could explain the presence of shape-shifters in the world.
I created a scenario in which shape-shifters evolved over thousands of years by merging the DNA of humans and a variety of animals by means of a bacterial infection.  The source was hot springs all over the world.  The hot springs contained a rare little bacteria that if it is imbibed by somebody with just the right RNA receptors and then within a short time frame they come into contact with a secondary DNA code then boom! you have the beginning of a race of shape-shifters.
Dr. Rae Hales, my heroine realizes during her research that if one is real, doesn't that mean they could all be real?  How else do you explain thousand of different legends of shape-shifters that arose from different cultures, sometimes on completely different continents.
I decided I wanted to start the series with a sexy, strong predator that hadn't really been done too much before.  There were tons of books about wolves, tigers, jaguars ect... but there really hadn't been a lot done on snow leopards.  I did research on the natural habitat and then from there, I researched folklore and myth on the different cultures of the Himalayas.  I first created the character of Kai Tenzin and then his romantic paramour Dr. Rae Hales.  I decided that I wanted each of their names to be the equal amount of letters to balance it out, Kai = Rae.  I also wanted them to come from opposite backgrounds as well, Kai came from wealth and a strong cultural background.  He had a strong father figure growing up, but no mother.  Rae was from a very deprived background, her mother fled an abusive home and had to work as a stripper in Las Vegas to feed her daughter.  Rae grew up never knowing her father.
The book also has strong spiritual overtones, and secondary plots regarding personal growth which are somewhat unusual for a romance novel.  All of these well designed aspects of the story make for an unusually strong paranormal romance.
The short ride to Kizhi island was exhilarating on the open hydrofoil.  Kai helped Rae off the boat as it docked at the seven mile long island.  The tour group followed their guide off the dock and onto the island.  They listened intently as the guide in stilted English advised them that the site had become a  world heritage site in nineteen-ninety.  There were more than eighty pieces of wooden architecture that made up the outdoor museum’s collection.  The guide then gestured for the large group to follow him.  The tour group was led up to a magnificent structure.  The center piece of the collection that was known as The Church of Transfiguration.
Rae felt as if she had stepped right into a storybook.  The guide started his official recitation on the history of the structure “the Church of Transfiguration has twenty two onion domes.  It was built during the reign of Peter the Great.  No nails were used in the construction and it was created by using interconnecting wood pieces only.”  Kai stood back taking picture after picture of the breathtaking silver domes.  The guide then indicated for them to enter and put his finger over his mouth to indicate silence.
As Kai and Rae walked in they could hear why the guide silenced them.  A trio of singers were performing a deeply moving mass.  Behind them a gold leaf Russian icon painting glinted in the light that was streaming in through the dusty windows.  The effect transported the tour group back in time.  They were now in a time before digital cameras, before cell phones, to a time when the Tzars ruled Imperial Russia with an iron fist.
About the Author:
My name is Shelly Holt and I live in the middle of the harsh and unforgiving Mojave desert. I write my stories looking out of a window that shows sweeping desert views. Outside is a barren and severe landscape, yet inside my head lives a world filled with exotic shape-shifters come to life, pulled from the pages of myth and legend, ready to entice and seduce any reader brave enough to take them on.
It's funny, I never wanted to be a writer!  In 7th grade English, we were given an assignment.  We were told to write an original poem and turn it in the next day.  I was determined to turn in not a good poem, but a great poem.  I spent the whole night working on it instead of watching my favorite show, The Waltons.  (Hey! it was 1980.)  I turned it in the next day.  Apparently, I succeeded a little too well and was accused of copying it from a book. (1980 remember, no internet yet).  The teacher stated and I quote "this is too good for a seventh grader, where did you copy it from?"  Well, I didn't write for 30 years after that. In my 40's, after a life changing move to rural Nevada as a caregiver to my father, I realized I needed a way to earn a little money on the side.  I did some research on the internet and read all about a certain little book, about a certain little college student and a handsome billionaire with some ahem! (issues.)  I decided after reading that book, I could do that, and Tasting Fire was born. I'll admit it's been strange revisiting a talent buried deep inside for so long, forgotten, but apparently not lost. It's been an important journey and one I am quite thankful for and excited to see where it takes me.
Shelly Holt
 P.S. Mr. Jordan, I really did write that poem!
Welcome everyone!  It's Fantasy Friday and I hope your Thanksgiving went wonderfully.  Gearing up for the holidays?  Consider adding this new book to your shopping list!  It sounds SUPER -- and the cover is just so very compelling!
Prophecy Foretold
An accident made him a savior.  Now Daniel Marten struggles to find himself and a way home while the armies of Naphthali battle to control him.
These are dark days for Naphthali.  The king has been murdered, the land invaded by the Imperial Army.  It will absorb Naphthali into an Empire that stretches across all of EnialĂ© at any cost.  The ravaged people cling to an ancient promise, an assurance that a Prophesied savior will come to set them free…Daniel Martin is trapped in a life that hasn’t gone as expected.  His pharmacy is struggling and he is losing all hope of making a difference in his patients’ lives.  His family is the one shining light in his disenchanted life, but he is torn from them when an accident draws him to Naphthali.  The people need him but Daniel is driven by his need to return to the family he loves.  Is he the Prophesied One?  Only time will tell as both the Empire and the Resistance battle for Daniel while the fate of Naphthali hangs in the balance…
I asked Ron what internal issues does his hero have to confront and overcome.  Here's what he had to say:
What a great question!  In The Prophecy Chronicles: Prophecy Foretold, Daniel Marten has several issues he has to overcome, the first of which is, “who is Daniel Marten?”  At the beginning of the story Daniel is in a car accident and is transported to another world.  When he comes to he remembers his name…but that’s about it.  Over time his memory slowly comes back, but while he is struggling to recall he gets swept up in a rebellion that rages across the country of Naphthali.
While Daniel is pulled along across the war-torn country he is forced to face the fact that life in our modern society has left him woefully unprepared for the rigors before him.  He has no survival or martial skills, and any sense of control he’d had over his old life is stripped away as he is forced to rely on strangers for everything.  His helplessness imprisons him more surely than shackles as he struggles with feelings of worthlessness, the words of his earliest nemesis echoing in his mind: “What good are you?”
Local Naphthalians and the invading Empire alike recognize him for a prophesied savior and try to make him fit that mold, but with Daniel’s internal struggles he is powerless to stop them.  To make matters worse, as his adventures become ever more dire, allies sacrifice themselves for their faith in him.  Their need and his guilt nearly destroy him.
Does Daniel overcome these struggles?  Well, I don’t want to give too much away, but he does remember his family…which only adds more guilt and feelings that he abandoned them.  He faces down some of his demons, but guilt dogs him throughout his adventures, not only in Prophecy Foretold, but also in the next two installments to follow.
He was a savior by accident.  Only time will tell if he fulfills the prophecy or throws everything away in a bid to go home.
Again, I say, it sounds really fascinating.  I have definitely added this one to my reading list, and I suggest you all do as well!
Let's take a closer look:
Gelnar wiped his blade clean on the man's breeches as he calmly looked around the farm. When he was done, he turned to his men and said, "Take her." The men gave a loud cheer and bounded from their saddles as the sergeant rushed forward and kicked the head from the woman's hands. He forced her to her feet as she finally realized what was going to happen. She screamed and tried to pull away.
Daniel felt hot fear in the pit of his stomach, but overriding that was an even hotter rage that he didn't know he possessed. He jumped from Blue Belle and pushed his way through the men, throwing his shoulder into the unsuspecting sergeant and knocking him to the ground. He looked into the woman's face and didn't realize until later that despite the horror surrounding her, she recognized him. He spun and pushed her behind him as her husband had done, looking at the hate-filled faces of the men.
Gelnar watched Daniel's charge with a slight smile on his face, and he laid a restraining hand on the sergeant's shoulder as he lurched to his feet. Daniel locked eyes with him and said, "Don't do this. You know it's wrong."
Gelnar's eyes narrowed and his jaws clenched before he finally chuckled and turned to the men. "Well now, the cunny's found his voice! And I thought he only had eyes for the goatherd." The insult thrown at Carmody was met with silence as everyone kept steely gazes on Daniel, murder in their eyes. Gelnar turned back to him and continued, "You presume much, but I am a…forgiving captain. You may have a turn with her, but you've hardly earned the Right of Firsts. I will allow you time…before she's done."
Daniel returned Gelnar's glare and shook his head. "Don't do this."
